Holiday 2010
Getting Cozy with Karen.
Holiday 2010 Musings
Wedding Vows
By Karen Docter
[Inspired by Jingle Bells carol written by James Lord Pierpont (1822-1893) in 1850.]
Dashing through the files
Looking for the perfect line
O'er the page we pore
Searching all the time
Words do sometimes bring
A smile, a sigh, a fight
A romance is a tender thing
To make things turn out right
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Our heroine just can't see
What the hero has inside
Until we do reveal
The words he tries to hide
He may be buff and fine
A financial wiz at work
If we can't find our line
He just sounds like a jerk
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
So here we sit all day
Looking for the perfect line
That reveals a man's true heart
A woman can't decline
She'll see the man beyond
The words he cannot say
We work to make their love
Turn out in just that way
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day yeah
What is happening in my world?
As with most of you, I'm finding the holiday season is chockablock full. My son is coming home on leave in just over a week. It will be the first time in a year he's been home so we're excited. One of my daughters got engaged at Thanksgiving. The wedding is the day after Christmas [yeah, you read right.this Christmas] so we can take advantage of her brother's leave time. I've also been busy with the usual stuff - baking cookies with the grandchildren, decorating the house for all of the festivities, and cleaning for the holidays. So much is going on I've been tempted to set my writing aside. But, as you can see above, my creativity hasn't gone completely on vacation.
The last couple of months I've been fiddling with my workshop and writing schedule for 2011. This has been a rough year for my career so I'm determined to hammer out a decent writing schedule to launch into next year. Several last Colorado Romance Writers projects I've been managing are finished or winding down in the next couple weeks and, once I hand them off to other volunteers, I'll turn that time over to my writing. To ensure that I use that time wisely, I'm going to flip my day around so I write first and deal with emails and other time sinks later in the day. I do my best writing in the morning!
As for my workshop, The "W" Plot.Or Other White Meat for Plotters©, I have several classes scheduled for 2011. My next online workshop begins on Monday, January 3 with the good folks at Heartland Romance Writers. If you have friends or peers who want to take the class, please pass on my newsletter or give them the information so they won't miss out. They can read more about the class on my site under WORKSHOP or NEWS or go directly to heartlandromanceauthors.com to sign up.
In addition to my online classes, I've been invited by the River City Romance Writers in Tennessee to be the featured speaker at their weekend writing retreat in April. I've never stayed at a reputedly haunted mansion, let alone tried to present my full-day workshop at one. Here's hoping the ghosts don't take exception to structure and plot points!
Hmmm, maybe I'd better think about how to work without an overhead projector...just in case there are any electrical bugaboos. Can you see me wrangling with a ghost over a powerpoint slide?! :-)
To keep up with what I'm doing in the coming year, I hope you'll stick around for my quarterly Musings. [My goal is to get these back to monthly Musings!] You can also check my website periodically to find updated information. I'm going to change up the website in the next few weeks so I'm hoping you'll check it out when it's finished.
As always, if you'd like to comment on this newsletter or anything else, please feel free to sign into my guest book at the bottom of this page. If you're on MySpace, you can find me at myspace.com/authorkarendocter. I'm now on Facebook, too, under my real name so let's be friends! And by all means, if you enjoy reading my Musings, please tell your friends. They can sign up for their own copy easily at the bottom of this column.
See you in January if you'd like to Get Cozy with Karen again. In the meantime, feel free to check out the rest of my website at your leisure and chat with me online.
I wish you a New Year overflowing with creativity and confidence. May you realize all of your dreams!
Happy Holidays to you and your families!
