**Author Peek** Interview with CHICKI BROWN
BORN TO BE WILD

INTRODUCING…Chicki Brown.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

My name is Chicki Brown. Really, folks. That’s not a pseudonym. My father said when I was born I had feet like a chicken. I’ve been stuck with it ever since I was two days’ old. J

I’m a small town Jersey girl who graduated from the same high school my father attended. Since 1994, I’ve lived in Atlanta, Georgia, the Jewel of the South.

I’m married with two grown daughters and five grandchildren. My love of reading was passed down from my mother, and I’ve always been a voracious reader. It wasn’t until 2000 that I started writing seriously. My first book was published in 2010. Other than reading, my other passion is music. I’m considering becoming a contestant on the new music game show, Shazam!

Being a full-time novelist is my dream, and I love every minute of it.

1. What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

Besides the actual creation of the story, I love doing the research into my character’s professions, their location, and other details. Even though I write fiction, I use real settings and with each book I learn so much.

While I was writing my last series, which was six books, I had to research fitness trainers, endometrial cancer, Las Vegas, public school media specialist, Nigeria, vigilante groups, Doctors Without Borders, sex addiction, sex therapists, South Bronx and the Upper West Side, New York, chief of surgery, starting a fashion line, MRSA, medical internship/residency, voice coach, Paris, France, urology, neighborhood health centers, autism in adults, and more.

The problem with enjoying the research is that it’s so easy for me to get lost in all the fascinating details when I should be writing. I have to limit my research time. 🙂

2. If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?

Ever since I was a kid I’ve had dreams of being able to fly. I believe it’s the freedom of soaring unencumbered and being able to look down on everything below. That would be awesome!

3. Do you ever get stuck when you’re writing a book? What do you do to get “unstuck”?

Some of my sisterscribes get annoyed with me when I say I don’t suffer from writer’s block, but I guess it’s because I look at it as being temporary and the result of something else. Either I’m tired, or I haven’t outlined the story well enough to know where I should go next, etc. Usually I take a break, pray, get out of the house, or take a nap. Once I’ve done one or more of those things, the block is gone.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

Sex/love scenes! OMG, I agonize over them. Either what I’ve written reads like porn or it’s so boring it puts the reader to sleep. What I’ve learned to do is work on a balance between the two, and I have a couple of people read the scene to make sure it not too hot or too tame. LOL!

5. If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

I can cook, but I don’t enjoy it. The only time I really have fun cooking is Thanksgiving and Christmas when my family does a huge dinner with all the trimmings. So, if I invited you for Thanksgiving dinner, I’d fix turkey with cornbread stuffing, fresh green beans with Craisins and slivered almonds, sweet potato soufflé, corn pudding, rolls, homemade pistachio cake and rum cakes with vanilla ice cream.

6. What do you wish you’d done differently when you first started the publishing process?

Wow! That’s a loaded question. I’d have to say I would’ve gone directly into indie publishing rather than spending years going the traditional route and submitting to editors and agents. It was a discouraging, soul-crushing trip, but at the time self-publishing wasn’t what it is now, so I guess it was all meant to be.

7. What is most difficult for you to write? Characters, conflict or emotions? Why?

As I mentioned above, sex scenes give me a fit. Other than those, I guess it would have to be conflict. I’m often too nice to my characters. My beta readers will point it out, and I have to go back and rewrite to give the characters more struggle.

8. A penguin walks into your office, right now, wearing a sombrero. What does he say to you and why is he here?

He would say, “Buenos dias, senora! I am here to let you know that you won a 30-day, all-expense-paid trip to Puerto Villarta for yourself and five friends. You will be staying at Villa Azul Celeste located directly above the sea on the Bay of Banderas, which offers incredible ocean vistas and a personal staff to make your stay carefree.”

Can you tell I desperately need a vacation?

9. If you could wave a magic wand, what ill in the world would you solve and why?

Racism, because I believe it is so vile and is the root cause of so many other ills, like poor education, poverty and hunger.

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published? Please provide links to your website, blog, books, etc.

My next book, Born To Be Wild, will be coming out next week. It’s the first in my new Lake Series.

Born To Be Wild tells the story of quiet bookworm, Tangela Holloway who has always been content working at her an independent bookstore in the sleepy little town of Eufaula, Alabama. But lately, Tangie discovers that she’s become bored and frustrated, especially since the man she’s been dating for two years seems to care more about his business than he does her. When Reese Turner rides into town on his Harley, Tangie’s heart feels like it’s beating for the first time. She not only sees the most exciting man she’s ever met, but also a chance to experience something other than backyard BBQs and fishing at the lake.

After ending a drama-filled relationship with a high-maintenance fashion model, Reese wants nothing more than to make a road trip to Florida for Bike Week with his motorcycle club. Never did he expect a quick stop at a small town bookstore would introduce him to a shy bookworm who makes him re-think his vow to remain single and unattached.

  1. Karen Docter says:

Good morning, Chicki, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. Love your answers. We’re a lot alike. I, too, would love to be able to fly even though I’m scared of heights. I would like to think I wouldn’t be scared if I had control. 🙂 I don’t experience writer’s block, per se. It’s usually related to external pressures that I just have to work through. We’re friends, right? You’re taking me on that all expenses paid trip for a month to Puerto Villarto? I’m packed! LOL Thanks for sharing with us today!

  2. Thanks for the introduction and interview, Karen. Nice to meet you, Chickie and I love the way you “earned” your name.
