Before we get started talking about your writing, I’d like to welcome you to my blog, Elaine! I know you write a lot of different genres, although we’re concentrating on your Mature Audiences only release, BEST LAID PLANS, this week. I know we’re all looking forward to hearing a little about you, where you’re from, etc. Whatever you’d like to share.
1. How did you get started writing?
I started writing in high school, a mystery serial for the school paper. Graduated to writing for radio/TV by working in a TV station – wrote commercials and radio shows. Then I started expanding some of my ideas into novels.
2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write a mix of genres: contemporary romantic comedies (some more erotic than others), sexy/sassy mystery thrillers and my non-fiction book: How to write the Amateur Detective Novel – part of Writer’s Digests’ Howdunit Series was nominated for the Agatha Christie Award and is part of the FBI’s Forensic library in Quantico.
3. What is your favorite part of writing?
Always – creating the characters. I take my time, really make them compelling…lots of background information I might not even use but my brain needs to write.
4. What is your least favorite part of writing?
Writing description. I’m a dialogue writer and if there’s a way to turn description into a conversation…I will find it and do it!
5. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
Sometimes ‘what if’ – other times from newspaper/magazine stories.
6. What is it that makes your writing different from all the others in your genre?
That’s a tough question! But from the reviews I get – it’s the characters and dialogue, people have actually thought some of my characters were real! My main character – Vixen Mallory (Video Vixen) received some interesting gifts: black lace thongs, Vixen Perfume in a gorgeous bottle and a card from an entire cell block of prisoner’s who wanted one thing for Christmas – an autographed nude photo of Vixen!
7. Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?
I am an avid reader but not when I write. I love thrillers and romances of all types.
8. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?
My newest book is going to be a gift to everyone who reads your blog: Best Laid Plans – while it was written in 1983 – and I do believe it might have been the first ever chicklit novel (high fashion plus interior design) and the first ever ‘friends with benefits’ novel – I got the rights back and expanded and enhanced the book in many areas. HOWEVER – it featured New Orleans before Katrina and I left the restaurants and menu prices as they were. It was also pre-TSA rules and people smoked on airplanes – the airplane scene actually happened to me and the nun. So I left that in!
