Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.
Hi Karen, thanks for having me on the blog today. I live in Colorado, very close to the city of Boulder, and I love being able to not only see the mountains on a day to day basis but to be able to get to them and hike with only a short drive. I wish I were a full time writer, but I’m still working a day job to keep that extra money coming in since my husband and I have two daughters in college who definitely always need something! I have a black Lab mix, Molly, who keeps me walking daily. And a very disgruntled cat, Ivy, who thinks my writing is just an excuse not to attend to her needs.
1. What appeals to you about the genre that you write?
I love paranormal romance because I get to take what I love about romance and romantic suspense and add a supernatural element. Whether I’m writing shape shifters, elves, or ghosts, it’s always interesting. I’m so lucky I get to create worlds that most people usually only see in movies or in our imaginations and I then I also get to create magical characters to fill those worlds.
2. Are you a plotter or a pantser (one who writes “by the seat of your pants”)?
I started off a pantser, but found that it took a very long time after the story was ‘done’ to fix all the plot holes and issues that occurred. Now, all of my romances are plotted out. I may not stick to the map and take some side routes, but at least I have an idea of where I’m going.
3. What is your favorite part of writing?
I love when the book is finished. It’s so satisfying to realize that I’ve accomplished this amazing feat of writing a book. I love looking at the cover and the blurb and knowing that inside that book is someone’s romance. And that I wrote it!
4. If you had to give up writing and do something else, what would you do instead?
I have no idea? I can’t imagine giving it up at this point. It’s my life. My best friends are romance writers and I spend all my free time going to writing events. I even have trouble talking to my old friends, sometimes, because what I really want to be talking about are books, books, books!
5. What’s your favorite meal of the day?
Breakfast, without a doubt. I love breakfast food, eggs, bacon, waffles. There is so much variety with what you can do and it comes together so quickly. And then there are the breakfast sweets. Yum!
6. Which are your favorite characters to write, the female characters or the male characters? Why?
I love writing the alpha guys. Especially the ones with issues. There is something about seeing a strong man realize he’s weak, and then doing something about it, that really turns me on. Those inner flaws are so interesting. And then I also get to talk about the brawn. Gotta love an alpha guy with muscles.
7. If you had a superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?
Have you ever watched Once Upon A Time on ABC? I think I would love to be the person with that magic pen who can actually create real worlds from their imagination. I get to do that on paper, but imagine actually using your talent to create real happy endings and see them come to life. That would be amazing.
8. Many writers dream of having the ideal location to write. If you could live anywhere in the world or live a particular lifestyle, where would you be answering these questions right now?
I’d love to be a snowbird. Stay in a cabin in the Colorado Rockies for the summer, then head on down to the beach for the winter. Somewhere with white sand where I could take long walks.
9. Do you have any rejection stories to share? Reviews that meant something special to you?
All my reviews are special. I love to see what people enjoy about my books. Even the cranky people have something to say. And sometimes they are super entertaining. I get a laugh out of the one that says, “I don’t know why I read this, I don’t like romance.” It gets me giggling every time. Really? Why did you decide to read a romance? LOL for sure. But most of my reviews are people who really do love romance and paranormal romance in particular. Those are the reviews that touch my heart.
10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?
My next book is number four in my Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance series and it comes out on March 18th. It’s called SCARLETT and it has been a real challenge for me to write. I love to take fairytales and twist with a contemporary feel. (And a few shape shifters!)
With SCARLETT, I wanted to twist a fairytale with two sisters, Rose White and Rose Red, so I wrote two books, SCARLETT and SILVER. Little did I know that trying to write two books that took place at the same time would be so much trouble!
But they are finally done now and SCARLETT has her bear shifter romance and will be out March 18th and her sister SILVER will have her own sexy alpha bear in April. If you love twisted fairytales, hot alpha males, and shifters all tangled together in romance, you will love both SCARLETT and SILVER’s stories.
Thanks, Karen, for having me as your guest today. I had a ton of fun answering your questions.
