**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with Karen Magill

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share.

I am from Vancouver Canada and I enjoy walking around the city taking photos and writing on the city’s history. I do that for my blog, Vancouver Vagabond.

I was forced to leave the work force in 2000 due to the onslaught of MS. So now I get to stay home and write. I am single without children and generally try to enjoy life.

1. How did you get started writing?

I come from a family of writers – my grandmother was a published author – and it has always been a form of escape for me. I grew up in small mining towns and wasn’t really popular with the other kids so I made my own friends. I am lucky enough to have the support and encouragement from family and that has helped to nurture and help my talent grow.

2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write paranormal. The first book I had published was The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story and the one after that was Let Us Play, A Rock ‘n Roll Love Story. The Bond is more of a romance than Let Us Play but both have elements of adventure and mystery as well as romance. My latest, Missing Flowers which is going to be published by Saga Books is more of a mystery that incorporates historical facts. Though it is still paranormal.

I write paranormal because I find the unknown to be fascinating. I truly believe that people are able to do more with their minds than we think. The history part is because I love history and I learn so much with my blog.

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

I love creating and I like being able to control my characters’ lives.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

Editing! Reading, and rereading the same story gets to me.

5. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

I am inspired by the world around me. Sometimes a simple phrase can inspire me to start a novel. Or like with The Bond, I was just trying to think of a different way for two people to meet and for that one they meet in an out of body experience. For Let Us Play it is all about the injustice of censorship. It was inspired by groups that keep stating certain types of entertainment should be banned.

6. What is it that makes your writing different from all the others in your genre?

I think often what sets my writing apart is the manner in which I view the paranormal. I want people to read my books and think that these events could happen, may have already happened. That perhaps there is more truth to them than first thought. I believe that the paranormal events I write about are just natural occurrences with certain people. And with my latest series I am incorporating Vancouver historical facts with the fiction.

7. Are you an avid reader?  When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I don’t read as much as I would like to but when I do I enjoy true crime – Ann Rule is one of my favorites – mystery, romance. In other words just about everything. Lately with working with Facebook promotional groups I have been trying to read some of the authors from there.

8. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

As I said my next book is entitled Missing Flowers and is being published by Saga Books though I don’t know when.

A young psychic, Julie Seer, moves to Vancouver and has dreams of prostitutes being killed. She is desperate to figure what is going on so she can stop the dreams. She ends up teaming up with a police detective and a prostitute to solve the mystery.

While trying to find the answers Julie also finds herself transported back in time into the body of a Chinese prostitute during the late 1800s. Here Julie learns about some of the history of Vancouver.

  1. Good interview. I don’t know how Karen controls her characters. Mine seem to control the story to their way. I agree with the mind ability.
