**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with Author, Kate Wyland

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share.

Thanks so much for having me, Karen.

I’ve lived most of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area. The last twenty we’ve been in a semi-rural area where we can have our horses. I’ve been a teacher and a technical writer, and have done magazine and newspaper articles.

Horses are my main hobby. Started riding very young, dropped out when I had my kids, but then got back into them when my youngest was a pre-teen. We have two now (just lost one) and they are very much members of our family. I’ve also been involved in musical theater—love to sing.

1. How did you get started writing?

As a history/English major, teacher, tech writer and newsletter editor, I’ve done a lot of non-fiction writing. I played with fiction off and on through the years, but didn’t get serious about it until eight years ago when I finally felt like I had something to say. Since then I’ve been involved in two excellent critique groups and have taken numerous workshops and classes.

2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I mainly write Romantic Suspense because I like stories that engage my mind and emotions. Will the bad guy get them? Will they get together after all? Definitely want a happy ending. I also dabble in stories with paranormal themes because I find that fascinating.

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

When my characters take over and the words flow easily. Sometimes I look at a page and wonder “did I write that?” There’s nothing to beat that happy feeling when things are clicking.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

Promotion has become a vital part of a writing career, but I have to say it’s not my favorite thing. Social media, blogs, book groups can really chew up time I’d rather devote to writing. I’m getting more comfortable with it, but wish it was less of a time sink.

5. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Lots of places. WYOMING ESCAPE was inspired by a vacation at the dude ranch. FOREWARNING is a result of my interest in alternative medicine. An experience my mom had while riding her horse sparked a plot idea for my current WIP. A guy practicing martial arts moves by the beach led to a similar scene in ESCAPE. Fodder is everywhere.

6. What is it that makes your writing different from all the others in your genre?

For one thing, my stories are usually in a horsey setting, so that makes them a little different. My first series is set in Wyoming. My second deals with horses and healing alternatives. Also, I like to write about small town, rural people who have a pragmatic take on life.

7. What is most difficult for you to write?  Characters, conflict or emotions? Why?

Conflict. Like most women, I was raised to avoid confrontations and to always be “nice.” It has taken me a while to get comfortable with writing conflict and with figuring out good ways for my characters to deal with it. Anger, while sometimes appropriate, is often too easy and immature. Being able to step back and give a measured response makes a character more interesting, in my eyes.

8. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

I just released FOREWARNING this weekend. It’s the first in my Horses and Healing Mysteries series. Available as an ebook on Amazon.

It’s the story of Kasey Martin, an alternative healer, who rescues an injured man and gets drawn into a web of mystery, danger and healing.

I’m also working on the sequel to my current book, WYOMING ESCAPE. I plan to have WYOMING HOPE available in the Fall. It continues the story of the people of the Triple H Dude Ranch.

  1. Agree with everything you said about promotion and conflict. You mentioned going to several workshops – which ones stick out to you as being the most meaningful?

  2. Kate Wyland says:

    Hi Jessica,

I’ve really enjoyed a number of Mary Buckham’s workshops and online classes. I get a lot from her. Donald Maass is another who gives a real bang for your buck–both his Breakout Novel and Fire in Fiction workshops were great. There have been lots of others, but those two stand out.
    Thanks for stopping by.
