**Author Peek** Interview with Mariana Gabrielle!

**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with

INTRODUCING…Mariana Gabrielle.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

I live in Denver, Colorado, where I grew up, with my two kittens, India and Burton. (Okay, not so much kittens any more at almost a year old.) In my day-to-day life, I am also a professional writer, editor, and designer, though nothing so much fun as fiction. I can often be found writing, editing, and formatting technical manuals, grant applications, government procurement documents, and online course materials. I have recently been moving into working with other authors as editor, cover designer, formatter, and marketing assistant, which is more rewarding.

1. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write mainstream historical and Regency romance, both, first and foremost, because I am drawn to the past. Regency actually stemmed not only from a love of history, but in an oblique way, from my love of the American antebellum and Civil War eras, where most of my maternal family history resides. The cultures are remarkably similar, the Southern aristocracy modeled almost entirely on the Old World (minus royal and noble titles, of course).

2. What’s your favorite beverage?

Coffee. Far and away, coffee.

3. If you had to listen to one song over and over again for a whole day, what would it be?

Sister Hazel, Change Your Mind.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

Endings, followed closely by setting. I invariably have to write at least three endings with very different conclusions, sometimes five or more, to get it right. It might help if I started my books with the end in mind, but I am a pantser, not a plotter.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would summer in Dublin and winter in Venice; Dublin for the open, friendly culture and the old world/new world dichotomy, and Venice for the beauty and boundless capacity for artistic creation.

6. Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I read just about every minute I’m not writing (or, you know, making a living, which cuts into my book time). I prefer historical, mainstream first, romance second. I am a creature of habit.

7. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

This answer is a strange combination of “everywhere” and “no idea at all.”

8. Tell me about your ideal reader.

The same as my ideal person. Smart, open-minded, passionate about the written word.

9. If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

La Déesse Noire: The Black Goddess is about the illegitimate daughter of a British peer and a tawaif, a paramour to Indian royalty. Kali Matai becomes one of London’s most famed dancers and courtesans, but her fame can’t protect her from ruthless men. It does, however, provide her influential champions who will do just about anything to protect her from harm.

  1. This looks so great! Thank you for hosting me! 🙂

  2. Tina Peterson says:

    Your book sounds interesting.
I also would love to live in Ireland.
    Will TBR your book!

  3. Mariana, I was amused by your comments on endings. I am also a pantser, but I always know the ending. I start with the ending. I have trouble figuring out how to get them there.

  4. Karen Docter says:

Good morning, Mariana, and welcome to Karen’s Killer Book Bench! We’re two peas in a pod. I love my coffee, day or night, industrial strength and decaf. So many different flavors! 🙂 Love Regency books, too, so I’ll be checking your book out. Happy Monday!

  5. bn100 says:

Do you ever change your mind about your ending after they’re published?

    • Yes! Emphatically yes! Beginnings, too. And middles. This book originally didn’t have an epilogue, but I was convinced, fairly late in the process, that it was needed. It is now my favorite chapter in the book. 🙂

The hardest thing about indie publishing *sometimes* is not going back and changing things just because it is simple enough to do electronically.

  6. Glenda says:

Interesting interview. I understand what you mean when you say that working as an editor, cover designer, etc is more rewarding than the technical writing aspect. When I was a technical writer is was kinda depressing knowing that most people would never even crack open the book – much less the detailed explanatory parts the developers argued amongst themselves over.
