**Author Peek** Interview with Monica DeSimone
SECOND HALF (Coach’s Shadow Trilogy Book 1)

INTRODUCING…Monica.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

Thank you so much Karen for having me. I am beyond tickled to have this opportunity.

Being a Texas girl that now lives in northern New Jersey you would think that the difference between South Texas and New Jersey would be insurmountable. And although it took me a good while to get use to the traffic, closeness of the homes and the fast pace of the New York Metropolitan area, I love it. Manhattan has a completely different vibe than any other city I’ve ever been to. Vibrant, loud, fast paced and is completely ideal for any artistic individual. There is always something to do and see. Which is right up my ADD alley!

My ultimate dream is to be able to sustain myself financially as full time author. However, until that day happens a girl has to pay the bills somehow, right? Working as an executive assistant for managing partners of national mortgage company is challenging, ever changing (especially in today’s market) and I absolutely adore it and my bosses. It keeps me on my toes and constantly going.

An odd but interesting fact about me is that travelling is something I have always wanted to do but don’t very often because it takes me out of my comfort zone. However, this past summer I spent travelling the United States, with all three of my boys, (I do not suggest anyone undertake that adventure alone with three dogs!). We have some amazing sights that I am grateful to have taken the time to see and experience.

If you were to show up at my home on a Sunday afternoon you would find me cooking for the week. It is a real passion of mine. It doesn’t always turn out aesthetically pleasing, but it is more often than not, pleasing to the palate. The Food Network is my guilty pleasure.

1. How did you get started writing?

Writing has always been my way of self-expression. I think I started writing in elementary school and never looked back. Ultimately, it was the passing of my father in April 2015 that prompted me to fulfill my dream.

2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

Contemporary romance that is borderline erotic.

3. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

Gosh, good one. I actually think “Please don’t kill anyone, Please don’t kill anyone!” I’m kidding.

I commute about forty minutes one way, so most mornings I work out the best way to attack my day ahead and if I have enough coffee to get me to the office. My commute home is when I seem to get creative and send myself talk to text messages or emails because one character or another is talking to me.

4. What is your favorite part of writing?

The escape!

Writing takes me to a world of my own creation. The characters are my friends and family. It also gives me courage to step outside that comfort zone and stretch my wings. I can do and say things I normally never do or say in real life as I can through my writing.

5. What is your least favorite part of writing?

Would it be too cheesy to say I don’t have a least favorite? Kidding! Actually, my least favorite part would have to be struggling to finish a scene when I know it stinks but need to get the words down because it is crucial to the overall book. I say that as I have been struggling on a scene now for the past three days. 🙂

6. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who would they be and why?

Audrey Hepburn and John Wayne. What a combo huh? To me they are who I so badly want to become and achieve in my life. Where Audrey Hepburn is all class, elegance and style; John Wayne is the ultimate man’s man. The Alpha; shoot first and ask questions later!

They both were huge humanitarians in their own right which is another aspect I respect about them. Audrey with UNICEF and John Wayne with his cancer foundation.

7. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

I was told by my creative writing professor at Oklahoma State University my freshman year to write what I know. She told me it will be more believable and relatable to the reader. So that’s what I do.

I was raised by a football coach and executive for a popular retail chain. The entire Coach’s Shadow Trilogy is a love letter to my parents.

8. Tell me about your ideal reader.

Anyone who loves the written word! I’m an avid reader myself and read for pure enjoyment and to escape.

9. What is your “go to” routine that helps you get in the mood to write? Special beverage? Music? Etc.

My “go to” routine? WOWZA… I really don’t have a special routine to my writing. I’m a fly by the seat of her pants kinda girl when it comes down to it.

I do feel I’m most creative and inspired in the evening, which is when I do most of my writing. Music is a HUGE part of my process and I have specific playlists for what I’m working on.

I also might, at times, take Hemingway’s advice to “write drunk, edit sober”.

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

My next book is Encroachment, book 2 in the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy and will be published soon.

  1. Karen Docter says:

Good morning, Monica, and welcome to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. Music is a huge part of my routine as well. Somehow it gets me in the zone. We could be sisters! I, too, would choose Audrey Hepburn and John Wayne. Both very admirable people, both on and off the screen. Audrey was always so elegant, too. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by to share with us!
