**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with Author, Sandra S. Kerns

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share.

Hi Karen, Thanks for having me here today. Where am I from? Originally upstate New York (which is where my love for all things Yankee began). I’ve also lived in Mississippi, Minnesota and now Colorado. My current day job of seventeen years is ‘Copy Lady’ at a high school where the staff has been unbelievably supportive of my writing.

My hobbies, though I don’t have time to give them much attention lately are sewing, quilting, tatting, gardening, and hiking. Something most people don’t know about me is I’ve also tried my hand at rock-climbing and piloting a small plane. Talk about a rush!

1. How did you get started writing?

Rather than the off-hand ‘I’ve written forever,’ answer, I started writing novels when we were living in Minnesota. Between watching my suspense television shows, reading voraciously, and cabin fever I always had characters running through my head when I would try to go to sleep. It was self-preservation that started me writing the story lines down during the day so the characters would let me sleep.

2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?

Romantic Suspense is my primary favorite to write and to read, though Futuristic Fantasy sneaks in now and then. I would say the reason I write suspense is I like figuring out the who and why. I’m always trying to figure out the end of shows/movies before they end.

3. What is your favorite part of writing?

I guess my favorite part of writing is watching the story unfold however it decides to go despite my efforts to make it go where I want. Which tells you I’m NOT an outliner. Do I know how it will end? It’s romance, of course I know how it will end. What I don’t know is how they will all get to that HEA. That’s the fun part for me.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

See #3. It’s very frustrating when you think you know better than the characters you’re writing only to find out your subconscious was right.

5. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
Everywhere. I’m serious. I was sitting at lunch with a friend at work one day and we were discussing my first series and how several people have told me they want the series to continue. Someone else came in talking about the old Indiana Jones movies. My friend said off hand, one of the sisters could be like Indiana Jones. Immediately my brain grabbed onto the idea and it’s been percolating ever since.

6. What is it that makes your writing different from all the others in your genre?

Jeepers, why don’t you ask a tough question? I don’t know what others would say, but I think it’s because my characters are so real for me that they comes across that way in my writing. I mean, I have serious conversations with other people where I talk about my characters as if they ARE friends of mine.

7. Are you an avid reader?  When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I’ll be honest. I know everyone says to write you have to read. To a point I suppose that is true. And I do read, but not as avidly as I used to because as soon as I start reading I stop writing. Reading is very addictive for me. When I do read I still prefer Romantic Suspense but am also starting to gravitate more and more to fantasy and thrillers.

8. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

Since I just released Callaghan’s Conundrum, the next book will be out in late July or early August depending on when I can get the edits done. It is the debut for a new series called Colorado Dreams and Desires. But, don’t worry, the other two series’ aren’t going away. I have several in the works for Colorado Skies, and because fans have asked that the Masters Men series continue, I have ideas percolating for the sisters of the trio of brothers and possibly other’s from their hometown of Braedon.

The first in the Colorado Dreams and Desires series, is entitled A Daring Proposal.

To keep her Colorado ranch, Chaney McBride needs a husband fast. One who will walk away, no strings attached after the fact. A man who has made it on his own, and doesn’t need or want the security of her ranch. Unfortunately, there’s only one such man available; Jed Sampson. But can she survive him walking away a second time?

Jed Sampson, small wood furniture designer, hasn’t come back to his adopted hometown just for his cousin’s wedding. He needs a short-term wife to win custody of his daughter. He needs someone willing to set up housekeeping temporarily, and not become too attached. Jed isn’t dumb enough to believe in love anymore. He only needs to convince a custody court judge he does. Once the papers awarding him custody of his daughter are signed, he can walk away. Or can he, when it turns out the woman he chooses still holds a piece of his heart?

Chaney and Jed’s reunion takes place at her sister’s wedding. Jed knows Chaney can’t resist a dare, and this will probably be his only chance. He dare’s her to marry him.
