KAREN’S KILLER BOOK BENCH Welcome to Karen’s Killer Book Bench where readers can discover talented new authors and take a peek inside their wonderful books. This is not an age-filtered site so all book peeks are PG-13 or better. Come back and visit often. Happy reading!
Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full–time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.
Hi everyone! First off, I’d like to say a huge thank you to Karen for inviting me to be here today. I’m really excited that I get to hang out with you. And now…a little about me.
Hmm, let’s see. I’m a huge hockey fan. But then, I’m Canadian, and living in one of the biggest hockey cities in the world—Montreal—so I guess being a fan goes without saying. I also play hockey (I’ve been a goalie on all-guys teams since the age of six) and have a ton of fun playing in my weekly hockey games. I’m write full time now (something I’m very grateful for), but before that happened, I worked as an interior designer downtown Montreal. A really fun gig where I got work with some of the most talented people around. I’m still in awe of them!
I read a lot. I write a lot. I prefer ski slopes to shopping malls and love being outside. That being said, I have a huge shoe addiction (as the state of my closet can attest!). I simply cannot resist pretty stilettos and gorgeous boots. Throw in a weakness for handbags and well, you get the idea.
1. What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write in a couple different genres…
The Dragonfury Series, paranormal romances set in modern day Seattle, is about a secret race of dragon-shifters who are locked in a bitter feud with a rogue faction of their kind. The Razorbacks (the bad guys) are working towards the extinction of humanity while the Nightfurys (the good guys) are battling to not only protect us, but to ensure the future of Dragonkind.
The first four books in the Dragonfury Series are available now, and fifth book in the series, Fury of Obsession, was released today.
I also write a historical fantasy romance series called The Circle of Seven with elite assassins, powerful sorcerers and a magic-driven Order up to no good. Dragons show up in this series too, so get ready for the fallout! The first two books in the series, Knight Awakened and Knight Avenged are available now.
2. What’s your favorite beverage?
Tea, hands down. But coffee is a very close second.
3. If you had to listen to one song over and over again for a whole day, what would it be?
Hmm, this is a tough one. It would depend on the day. I’m eclectic when it comes to music. Today, however, I’m leaning toward Outside by Calvin Harris (featuring Ellie Goulding). But tomorrow, it might be Ghost by Ella Henderson or even Mary Go Round by Serena Ryder.
4. What is your least favorite part of writing?
I love it all. Every stage of writing a book appeals to me in some way, shape or form, but I adore the revision process after the first draft is done. There is just something about digging in, digging deep, and rounding out a story that is incredibly gratifying.
But if I had to choose, I’d say writing THE END is my least favorite part. I have a hard time letting my characters go after I’ve spent so much time with them.
5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Prague. I really enjoy that city. The old and new come together, add the Vltava River snaking right through the center of town, and…beyond gorgeous.
6. Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?
I’m a huge reader. I love stories of all kinds. I think in order to be an effective writer, I need to read. There is something that happens to authors when we read. Whether we are aware of it or not, there’s a kind of osmosis occurring, a learning process that grinds into motion while reading. As for my favorite genres, I read a lot of romance-suspense and psychological thrillers. I like a fast paced, intriguing story with lots of twists and turns. A story that’ll make me think and puzzle things out. So, I guess that’s why I’m drawn to those kind of books.
7. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
Honestly? I don’t know. Ideas are never a problem for me. They come on their own, without my doing anything at all. My greatest challenge is finding enough time to eventually write all the stories that end up collecting inside my head. I’ve started story file where I keep all the ideas that ebb and flow inside my imagination. Some day, I hope to write every single one.
8. Tell me about your ideal reader.
An ideal reader? Hmm…I’m not sure I have one. I have an open door policy. Come one. Come all. I love it when readers from all kinds of different places pick up my books. My hope is that they enjoy the stories I write as much as any other they’ve read in whatever genre they prefer.
9. If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?
The power of Invisibility. Imagine all the places I could go, all the airplanes I could board, without anyone being the wiser!
10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published? Please provide links to your website, blog, books, etc.
Oh, my next book! Fury of Obsession, the fifth installment of the Dragonfury Series, comes out today. That’s right…TODAY! Can you tell I’m excited about it? My readers have been waiting patiently for Venom’s book, and I’m so glad release day has finally arrived.
So that’s it in a nutshell. Thanks so much for stopping by. And when you have a chance, drop me a line. Sign up for my newsletter for all the latest news. Visit me on Twitter, connect with me on Facebook or email me anytime. I’d love to hear from you!
FURY OF OBSESSION
A Dragonfury Novel
BY COREENE CALLAHAN
Dragon-warrior Venom lives in self-imposed isolation. Cursed by his toxic touch, he is deadly to anyone who has contact with him for too long. Set apart from others and hounded by intense loneliness, he craves the lasting connection he believes he cannot possess. Until a chance encounter with a sultry mortal offers a ray of hope…
Evelyn Foxe is the woman of Venom’s every desire, but she’s too busy running from the Russian mob to think about love. As she accepts Venom’s offer to help her escape her precarious situation, she’s skeptical, afraid that he’s in league with those sent to harm her. But when a biological weapon is unleashed in her hometown, Evelyn is forced to trust Venom—or risk the dangers of going it alone.
FURY OF OBSESSION
A Dragonfury Novel
BY COREENE CALLAHAN
[Taken from pg. 331]
“It’s nothing serious,” he said, lying through his teeth. Tell her . . . tell her about energy-fuse. He’d revealed so much already, trusting her with a secret only Wick knew. Still, the words refused to trip off his tongue even as honor urged him to be honest. Down and dirty. Quick and clean. The truth tied up in a neat little bow. Venom cleared his throat. He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Goddamn it, he was pathetic. In need of a good ass-kicking or something. A boot to the balls. A fist to the head. The method didn’t matter just as long as it allowed him to move forward. Away from the fear of her rejection. “Really, it isn’t, but I’ve still got to go.”
Her brow furrowed. “Why are you lying to me?”
“You’re asking me to take a lot on faith, Venom.” Raising her hand, she stroked a finger along his jaw. “To trust you without proof or knowing why.”
“A tall order.”
“It is, but . . .” He trailed off, struggling to find the right words. Again. Like always, but like it or not, he needed her to stay put until he got home. Her safety wasn’t optional. It qualified as a must. Especially now that Ivar knew her name. The rogues weren’t stupid. Masters of technology, the bastards pulled intel off the Internet in the same way Sloan mined human data- bases. Personal information—address, job history, friends, bank account numbers—ranked as important when hunting prey. Which meant his enemy would already be tracking her credit cards, looking for patterns and preferences in the hopes of finding her favorite haunts. “Do this for me, Evie. Stay here. It’s not safe for you in the city after dark.”
Chewing on the inside of her lip, Evelyn held his gaze. One second ticked into more. Silence spun into tension. Venom stayed quiet, forcing himself to be patient, waiting her out, praying she fell in line.
