Excerpt

What a mess.

The bell sitting on the counter above my head ding-ding-dinged in an irritating way. I huffed. Really?

I heard, “Hey,” —two dings— “I need help. Anybody working today?”

Despite the din assaulting my ears, I didn’t answer, and not because I was mean. Because I was a woman on a mission. It was imperative I retrieve the hundred dollar bill that had vanished when The Copper Teapot’s front door had erupted wide with a wintry gust. All kinds of stuff had gone flying like price tags, papers, and hard-earned moola. In today’s sucky economy, every smidgen of revenue mattered.

Obviously, this guy couldn’t see me crouched down on the floor. His toe tapping and bell ringing conveyed his impatience. Sticking the ruler in the gap between the floor and the showcase, I bit my lip and concentrated, waving the tool back and forth so I could snag the elusive dinero. Another three-note ding sounded, and I rolled my eyes before singsonging, “Just a…minute, please.”

Fingers drummed above my head. I shrugged my shoulders, thinking, rats. Every customer is important. Guess I should be a responsible business owner and do the right thing. “Be right with you.”

“Okay, but hurry.”

“Almost…there…Got it!” I jumped to my feet and dangled the money in his face. “Pay day.”

I finished my jig to check out the customer only to find —Oh By Golly— Jack, as in the Jack Treadaway, the hunky hunk from Sommerville High School days. I couldn’t believe this man graced my shop.

Why was he here?

What I like about Christmas, by Vicki Batman… 読書

The lights. As a kid, my dad would drive us around and we would ooh and aah over the decorations which were primarily lights strung along the roofline. Several years ago, I went on a girlfriend trip to a historic town. Many of the trees were decorated with stars. So now, I’m fixated on lighted stars.

The ornaments. My mom was highly creative. One year, she made ornaments with red satin balls, adding sequins and odd bits of pieces of jewelry, faux pearls and glitter. Sadly, she gave hers away, but I have searched for treasures of my own to decorate with. I also love vintage ones made from felt.

The music. I grew up listening to old-school favorites, Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra. I’ve added classical guitar, Michael Buble, Chris Botti, Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman…Lordy, I have 326 Christmas songs on my iPod. And yes, the minute Sirius FM has Holly and Holiday Traditions playing, I’m tuning in.

Fruitcake. Now, don’t go making a face. I grew up with delicious ones, filled with nuts and other goodies. My favorite dessert is to cut a fruitcake into bite size pieces, and cover with chocolate melting chips. Everyone thinks they are eating candy. LOL

The movies. My list is endless. I have always watched Charlie Brown’s Christmas, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Having men, I had to add some boy-oriented ones: Stalag 17, for example. But I always-always-always watch White Christmas every Christmas Eve. And sing the songs.

Family and Friends. There’s nothing like sharing and laughing over a good meal, even if it is pizza. And I especially like giving them something I’ve made and hope they will treasure.

I like to write holiday stories. This year, I wrote “Holiday Handbag Extravaganza” for the Season of Surprises anthology. I love handbags and especially those which were crafted by Enid Collins in the sixties. Here’s a blurb and a small excerpt:

Christmas Countdown is on! Hunk-a-licious customer, Jack Treadaway, pesters boutique owner, Callie Woods, to locate a vintage handbag for his mother. Too bad the wedge between them is his sister, the meanest girl in town.

  1. Vicki Batman says:

Thank you, Karen, for letting me visit with you today and sharing a few of my “favorite things” about the holidays. Happy days to you!!

  2. Melissa Keir says:

I’ve been looking for this one set of vintage lights that I remember as a child. It was a string of bells that played music and was large enough we had it up outside. It had garland and the bells blinked along with the music. Sometimes those old memories are worth money to replace!

  3. Love Vicki’s stories! Her character’s are lovable, funny and perfectly unperfect! I also love your favorite holiday list!

  4. Great memories for sharing, Vicki. I truly believe in the Christmas magic and what we chose to make of it.

  5. Vicki Batman says:

Hey, Melissa, you should send me a pix of those lights. I’ve been shopping flea markets and antique malls lately and might see some.

Hi, Stanalei! I realized why I wasn’t exuberantly festive–because I’ve been rushing around and not taking the time to enjoy. That’s changing.

  6. I start reading Xmas books at the end of each November. Right now I’m on Melody Carlson’s book about an 85-year-old woman who drives a motor home across the U.S. to bring cheer to winners of her blog contest. Really cute! My family always drives around our small city to see the decorations plus we have a Christmas Tree Lane where all houses must be decorated in some fashion and people walk down the short street or drive in a circle up one side and down the other. It’s become a tradition for us and I enjoy that kind of thing.

    • Vicki Batman says:

Hi, Patty! I love Christmas lights. In fact, I good a pix of one near my yoga class. The branches had been outlined in a fiery red and the trunk in a lime green. Outstanding! I may be taking a lot of pix of trees this year.

And what a fun book. Thank you for sharing. Hugs!

  7. Karen Docter says:

Good morning, Vicki. My mom had this set of pink glass beads that we used as garland every year as far back as I can remember. When she bemoaned the fact last year that so many of the glass beads had broken she was worried about putting it up any longer. Spent some time looking for something similar. Found something close. I loved those beads. We used to fight over who was going to put them on the tree. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by to share your story with us!

  8. Vicki Batman says:

Hi, Karen! I know exactly what you mean. Mine is a little angel and she did give it to me this past summer. I’m so happy to have her.

  9. Linda Bateman says:

    Vicki,
Thank you for sharing your, “What I like for Christmas” We have similar tastes.
My Mother in law gave us our first box of homemade ornaments, on our first Christmas, as a couple. That was 49 years ago and I still use them. They are made out of egg cartons, with beads, glitter, rick rack and material. Some have Christmas scenes inside. My grown daughters love to see that I still use them. There was a lot of love and time put in making them and we appreciated that, more as the years went on. Just to Share.
Can’t wait to read the Season of Surprises series. Happy Holidays

    • Vicki Batman says:

First off, Linda, we are almost sisters with the “e.” How much fun!!! I wish you would send me a pix of the ornaments. They sound lovely and very special.

I hope you like Season of Surprises. I adore the cover. Squee! Thank you for visiting with me.

  10. Cara Marsi says:

    Hi, Vicki,

I love your story in Season of Surprises. I’m delighted to be part of the box set with you. Many of your Christmas memories are similar to mine. I loved the bubble lights my parents had and would love to find a set now. I watch White Christmas every Christmas holiday, in addition to Christmas in Connecticut and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, not to mention I overdose on Hallmark Christmas movies.

  11. Vicki Batman says:

Hi, Cara! I’m so happy you like “Holiday Handbag Extravaganza.” I bought a new version of bubble lights ages ago at Target. They got really hot and I was worried about that; so we didn’t use often.

I’m making a holiday movie list too. Let’s compare in Jan. Hugs!

  12. Angela Adams says:

I love the animated version of the Grinch with the voice of Boris Karloff.

  13. Lyn says:

White Christmas is on my iPod. The movie.

But I also love Miracle on 34th Street (the real one with Natalie Wood as the moppet) and Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck. If I ever find a DVD of that, I will buy it, because it hardly ever comes on the TV.

And It’s A Wonderful Life. That movie took me a long time to understand and to love. It’s a movie for grownups.

Thanks for the lovely article, snippet, heads-up for the sale, and the interesting comments. 🙂

  14. Hey, Karen and Vicki. Love your list, Vicki. My grandmother made Hermit cookies. I now make a variation using mincemeat. No one else in the family really likes them, but I love’em and make’em anyway. Have to give away a bunch to keep them all from going on my hips! LOL Enjoyed the post and I FBed and Tweeted.
