IN SEARCH OF TRUTH
Deadly Force Book 3
BY SHARON WRAY

Some treasures are hidden in plain sight….

In Search of Truth is about a widowed anthropologist named Allison Pinckney who inherits a key to a seventeenth-century pirate cipher that makes her the target of two brutal arms dealers. Now, to save those she loves and discover who murdered her husband, she must solve the cipher. But as this mission becomes more and more dangerous, she reluctantly seeks help from a handsome man from her past. A man who’d once been her best friend, ex-Green Beret Zack Tremaine. The problem is that if she admits the secret life she’s been living, and gives in to her long-buried feelings for Zack, it could cost them their lives.

Years ago, Zack Tremaine betrayed his men and lost Allison, the only woman he ever loved. Today, those regrets are destroying him. And now that his men are caught in a fierce rivalry between two deadly enemies, his only hope to fix his mistakes is to help Allison find her husband’s murderer. When he discovers Allison holds the secret to a pirate treasure, a treasure that may help him save his men, he ignores orders and gives up everything to help her search for an infamous pirate who died three hundred years ago. Despite the deadly risks, Zack has one last chance to save his men and redeem his honor. Even if the woman he loves breaks his heart…again.

This book, the third in the Deadly Force romantic suspense series, follows a group of ex-Green Berets who’ve been dishonorably discharged and are forced to live in a rundown, kitschy pirate-themed gym in a sketchy part of Savannah, GA. These men have no money, no contacts, no power. Yet they’re forced to fight for their lives and their honor against two merciless enemies. Their only hope lies with the women they love who help them understand that victory lies not in the type of 21st century warfighting they’re used to, but in the mysteries of the past.

My publisher titled this book In Search of Truth for a reason. It’s not just about two people who are searching for the truth about the death of Allison’s husband and the reason Zack’s Green Beret unit was dishonorably discharged. It’s also about the destructive nature of fear. Throughout the book, Allison and Zack must face the realization that the choices they made earlier in their lives, because they were afraid, brought them to this place of desolation and regret. They learn, throughout the book, that decisions based on fear never work out. In fact, they make everything worse.

In this book, Zack and Allison have made terrible choices based on fear that have made their lives worse. But they’re not the only ones. And the cumulative effects of people acting out of fear almost cost them their lives. It’s only when Zack and Allison face this truth that they can make brave and daring choices to change the course of their lives. Much like us in the real world—when we step out of fear and make brave decisions, our lives can change for the better. When we live our truth, we can change the world.

While this book also attempts to solve the real-life mystery of what happened to the Pirate King Henry Avery’s treasure—the largest pirate treasure ever taken and never found—and has complex emotions and plot points, it’s also fun. Zack and Allison travel from Savannah, to Charleston, to New Orleans—falling in love, eating fabulous food, and even dancing in a romantic, hidden restaurant in the French Quarter—in a fast-paced adventure with action, danger, a ghost, and adult situations. J

I loved writing this book. It took a huge amount of research, writing, and editing time and I enjoyed every minute of it. While the men of Zack’s ex-Green Beret unit are 21st century men of action, it’s fun to put them into situations where they have to rely on others for intel and insight. I especially enjoyed the scenes where Allison–a PhD cultural anthropologist who named her dog Nicholas Trott after the first Chief Justice in 1703 Charleston—ends up outwitting all of the men (both good and bad) in the book because she’s the only one who understands how the past is affecting their present.

This book, like the previous books in the series, is long and twisty and has a large cast of characters. It’s not a simple read, but I promise it’s fun, sexy, and you’ll never think about ghosts, or pirates, or even sexy Green Berets in the same way ever again!
