MURDER MAKES A MISTAKE
Grace’s Augusta Mystery Book 4
BY CHARMAIN ZIMMERMAN BRACKETT
The radio news report sent a chill down Grace Ward’s spine. She couldn’t believe her ears. Her husband had been arrested in the death of a young woman. There had to be a mistake, and it’s up to Grace to find out what really happened.
I noticed multiple texts and calls from Emmie in the past 30 minutes. I called to see what was so urgent, but instead of her answering, I heard Trevor’s doorbell ring. I ended the call. I knew she was at the door. I swallowed hard. I felt a knot form in the pit of my stomach. Over the past few days, I had an uneasy feeling about Drew, and I couldn’t shake it. I’d even had a couple of hazy dreams, nothing definite. I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t reach out to him. He didn’t want to talk to me. He didn’t want to see me, and I couldn’t take the rejection.
“It’s Emmie,” I said, choking out the words.
Trevor narrowed his eyes before he left the kitchen. He looked puzzled, and I gave him a weak smile. I knew her coming over meant something bad, and I knew it had to be her at the door. He walked to the front door, and I timidly followed. I didn’t want to hear what Emmie had to say.
Sure enough, when he opened the door, Emmie burst through and walked directly to me without saying a word to Trevor. She put one hand on each of my arms and stared at me.
“What happened to Drew?”
Her jaw dropped, and she stared at me.
“How did you -?” she sighed. “Never mind. You obviously haven’t been listening to the radio.”
“With the funeral – ”
“I know, honey. I know, but this is – “
She paused. She opened her mouth as though she was going to say something, but she didn’t speak.
“Bad.” I finished the sentence.
