“Hasn’t nature had enough-her thirst for blood satisfied?”

Bethany Keatley hoped her life would finally be normal, but on returning home to Springs, Georgia and the love of her life, Jeremiah Wright, she discovers she’s to blame for his hideous burns. Bethany’s his cure but she’s not the only one who knows.

Abducted and locked away by powerful, desperate people hired to destroy her supernatural blood, Bethany and Jeremiah undergo unethical experiments. It’s only after the sheer potential of their mixed blood is revealed that their enemies turn on each other and new alliances are formed.

Who can be trusted when everyone has something to gain?

Bethany and Jeremiah unite to fight for their lives against real-life villains and an unquenchable power growing within Bethany, but time is running out and Bethany can’t take any more loss.

With Jeremiah’s life on the line, a new monster will be unleashed.

Interview

INTRODUCING….The one and only, Rebecca Carpenter!

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

Hello!

I live in western Colorado with my husband Cory and two dogs, Pinny, a min-pin who spends her days searching for food and a warm lap, and Lexi, a black lab who is my husband’s diabetic alert service dog.

Although our two children are grown, the revolving door has opened inward, and our son and his two children are currently living with us while he attends college. The youngest is three, so I have surrendered my home to her whims of castles and forts and the throw pillows on the couch being used for whatever she’s pretending at that moment—stepping stones over hot lava her current favorite game. And the dogs love that she shares the pillows with them, too. Messes are the norm. I mean, how can one have fun if one doesn’t make a mess? Roly-polies must be collected and protected at all costs, and every step outdoors is an adventure into her imagination. I must say, it’s exhausting, but I wouldn’t do anything to squelch her enthusiasm for life. We have five total grandchildren, who are the best things ever.

Besides being a part-time writer, I spend my days as an ophthalmology tech, preparing victims for eyeball torture, and I also freelance as a certified copy editor for Kate Foster Professional Editing Services. Most of the time my husband wonders where I am or who I am.

When I’m not in front of a computer or entertaining a three-year-old, I enjoy hiking the beautiful mountains that surround my city, taking walks, reading a great book, spending time with family, and baking and cooking.

1.  What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write young adult contemporary science fiction, but I also dabble in middle grade, picture books, and screenplays. I have so many voices in my head that have to get out, and so far I haven’t found an age or genre that screams louder than others, so I listen and do what they tell me.

2.  What’s your favorite beverage?

My favorite beverage would be water with a lemon slice. But if I want to live on the edge I might drink a root beer or limeade. Flavored lemonades with added fruit are pretty awesome, too.

3.  If you had to listen to one song over and over again for a whole day, what would it be?

If I had to listen to one song over and over for an entire day, I would say “Madness” by Muse would be my choice, especially under the current world circumstances. It’s uplifting, inspiring, and has a great beat.

4.  What is your least favorite part of writing?

My least favorite part of writing is all the research. It’s so time consuming, and although necessary, feels like I’m wasting precious writing time. With my books having a lot of science and medical themes, I had to spend an equal amount of time researching as I did writing. But I must say, having a factual base to build upon, even in science fiction, pays off in a huge way.

5.  If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I love where I live. We experience all four seasons, but other than our hot summers, the rest of our seasons are mild. The mountains are my place of refuge, my place to rejuvenate and recharge. And almost all my family lives here or close-by, which is a wonderful blessing. So I’ll stay put and just visit the ocean, which would be my next choice.

6.  Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?

I do so much copy editing that I am reading someone else’s manuscript almost daily, but unfortunately I don’t get much time to actually pick up a book of my choice. When I do, I enjoy any genre that’s well-written and full of suspense. But a good thriller usually piques my interest more than others.

7.  Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Ideas for my stories come from songs, random people and places, news headlines, or the voices that never seem to stop talking in my head. I guess you could say they come from anywhere and everywhere, I just have to listen and pay attention.

8.  Tell me about your ideal reader.

The ideal reader for the Metamorphosis Series is one who enjoys a well-written, unique story, strong prose, a suspenseful plot, and maybe someone who is drawn to the world of the strange and weird. I would say that my target audience is women aged thirteen to thirty, but I have had quite a few male readers who have enjoyed the books, as well.

9.  If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?

If I could choose one superpower, it would be to remove illness and suffering from the world. Living with a spouse who suffers with health problems has opened my eyes and heart to those who deal with chronic health issues—mental, physical, or otherwise—and the struggles they go through each and every day just to survive. And maybe I would fly. That would be pretty awesome, too.

10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

As of September 1st, 2020, Butterfly Broken is my newly-released book, the third and final in the Metamorphosis series. Publishing the final installment has been bittersweet. I feel such a sense of accomplishment, but at the same time I will miss my characters and their journeys. Having characters who’ve been constant companions for the last six years, whispering their stories, speaking their truths, is a hard thing to let go of. But I have a middle-grade girl who’s dying to take their place and have me finish her story, as well as a screenplay that is begging to be made into a novel. So I have plenty to look forward to. But for now, I will celebrate Bethany and Jeremiah, the main characters of the Metamorphosis Series, who taught me about loss and accomplishment, heartache and love, and overcoming the worst in ourselves and others, no matter what the odds.  I love my characters, and I hope you will, too.
