C.A.S.I. Book Three
BY T.L. SCHAEFER
Private Investigator Monica Foudy has always been twitchy around her ex’s best friend, Heath Farrell. The ice-cold former NSA spook has vowed to help rescue her daughter from a sociopath with an unfathomable agenda. But there’s more at stake than Tori’s safety—Monica’s very sanity. How she deals with the barrage of others’ feelings and the nightmares tearing her apart will either doom them all to a life of slavery or gift them with a freedom they never dreamed of.
He gave a soft grunt, as if something had struck him, then his hands were tangling in my hair and his lips descended on mine.
As a first kiss, it obliterated anything I’d ever felt before. His lips were firm as he nibbled on mine, coaxing me into response. Sensation cascaded through me and I opened for him on a sigh and returned his kiss, as I’d wanted to do for so very long.
He murmured my name on a ghost of a whisper and dove in, taking control, kissing me as if our very lives depended on it.
I arched against him, needing contact, and as soon as our bodies truly aligned he went rigid, as if the contact had seared him right down to his bones.
“Jesus, Monica,” he breathed against my lips, his hands moved down from twisting in my hair to frame my face. It made me feel tiny. Precious in a way I’d never experienced. “How long have you felt this way?” I knew exactly what he was asking. How long had I been attracted to him? How long had I fought against the pull both of us obviously felt?
I remembered Joe’s words of just a few days ago. How Heath had always wanted me. Now all I felt was the clarity of revelation, and it was as if something inside had broken free, then clicked home. Like a puzzle piece that had been shoved into the wrong place.
I was born and raised in Mariposa, a rural enclave of Yosemite National Park. I’ve lived in Yosemite, California’s Bay Area, the Portuguese Azores, and currently reside in the Red Carpet Country of northern Oklahoma where I work as a Public Affairs Officer for the Department of Defense.
I’m also the proud spouse of a retired Air Force medic…go figure how I got employed by the DoD.
I’m a great believer in Fate. Yeah, with a capital “F”. And I write in those terms. Why? Probably because my beloved husband said he fell in love with me the first time he saw me. You might ask if it was a two-way gig… In a word, uh-uh. Not that he wasn’t fine to the extreme, but I wasn’t looking for forever…more of a fun vacation experience. Yeah, so now we’ve muddled our way through almost thirty years of marriage, and I have to admit to his superior intuition on that one!!
So, if you’re looking for an Alpha hero who just happens to “know” his life-mate when he sees them, don’t be overly surprised.
If you like your heroes in uniform (be they cops, firefighters, or military) and your heroines with a bit of quirk, check out an excerpt or two to wet your whistle!
