WIDE AWAKE ASLEEP
A Time Travel Romance
BY LOUISE WISE

BLURB

Wide Awake Asleep: a time travel, paranormal adventure.

Can you really be on the WRONG path in life?

No one knew she was driving on that stretch of road. No one saw her car leave the highway and crash into a watery ditch. No one heard the car’s windscreen smash or saw the tree branch come through to impale her to her seat. No one heard her screams.

Julie Compton’s life should have come to an end that day, but instead, that moment was the beginning of her new life as she wakes, unharmed, back in 1972 and primed to relive her traumatic childhood all over again. One flaw. She’s in the body of a stranger.

Journey back to the 70s and 80s England where Julie is forced to jump through the eras, occupying and controlling other people’s bodies she knew as a child. She must work out which destiny path was the wrong one all while wondering if her body, back in 2016, was dying in her car.

With each momentous change, her memories transform and she realises she’s not only changing her future but of those around her. She’s finally ‘living’ but does that mean she must die?

EXCERPT

I thought I heard a voice, and I cocked my head, but the sound was carried away on a gust of wind. The feeling of hands touching my body subsided and I was left in this paradox universe, where I was me inside someone else’s body.

I looked down at myself and the first thing I saw was a plaid skirt, then thick tights which sagged at the knees and ankles.

My heart began to beat in horror. No, no. Please, God, no.

My hands touched the stained cardigan over my large droopy breasts. Up further to my face…

My hands recoiled.

I felt a moustache!

I gasped in horror. I was ‘Auntie’ Iris Grimshaw!

It was bad enough being goofy Sarah Marshall, but now I had a moustache! And a bloody monobrow!

Iris began to walk, and I felt a sharp pain in my hip. I slowed, but the pain persisted. It shot down my left leg every time my foot touched the ground. No wonder the old sod was grouchy. Ouch!

It looked to be a very early morning, judging by the dew sparkling on the grass and hedgerows. It was cool, but not overly so, and there were leaves on the trees. Summer again. I wondered at the year. The village didn’t look any different at first, but then I saw the beginnings of new houses being built opposite the village hall. So Potterspury did move on.

NOTE FROM LOUISE: For those on a low carb diet, these granola bars are lovely and help to take off that ‘I want sugar’ moment. https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/low-carb-granola-bars/servings/10

LOW CARB GRANOLA BARS
[20 Servings]

1½ oz. almonds (I used a selection of supermarket mixed seeds)
1½ oz. walnuts
1⁄6 oz. sesame seeds
1⁄6 oz. pumpkin seeds
½ oz. flax seeds
1⁄6 oz. unsweetened shredded coconut (dried flakes worked for me)
1⁄6 oz. dark chocolate with a minimum of 70% cocoa solids
3 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons tahini (sesame paste)
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ pinch sea salt
1 egg
1½ oz. dark chocolate with a minimum of 70% cocoa solids, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Instructions are for 20 servings. Please modify as needed.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a blender or food processor until they are chopped coarsely, not too finely.
  3. Use a spatula to place in a baking dish, 7–11 inches, preferably lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake for 15–20 minutes until the cake has turned a nice color, without letting it burn.
  5. Let cool a little and remove from the baking dish. Divide into 20 or 24 pieces with a sharp knife.
  6. Melt the chocolate for decoration in a water bath using a double boiler or in the micro-wave oven.
  7. Dip each bar in the chocolate, but just about half an inch or on just one side. Let cool completely.
  8. Keep in the refrigerator or freezer.

  1. Thank you for this yummy and healthy looking recipe! Also, I’m beginning to read Christmas romances and An Ex for Christmas looks great! Also, “Wide Awake Asleep” sounds funny, and I may give it a try, though romance usually isn’t my genre. It sounds as though it’s written very well.

Thanks again for this fun read.

  2. Samantha McFarland says:

    Hi.
The recipe looks really good. I might have to try that. I make granola bars, but they have honey and brown sugar….
As for the book, I don’t read time travel books. But the description and excerpt grabbed my attention. I might have to check this one out.
    Thanks for both.

  3. Karen Docter says:

Good morning, Louise, and welcome to Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! I love time travel and one of my favorite tv shows was Quantum Leap with Scott Bakula jumping into other people’s bodies. This story sounds like fun! Thanks for sharing both your book and your recipe with us today. I’m going to have to try this granola bar because it sounds healthier than any versions I have.

  4. Kathleen Bylsma says:

Thanks for the introduction, Karen, and nice to meet you, Louise!
Interesting premise and excerpt. The recipe sounds very tasty, too!

  5. Eileen AW says:

Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe. Interesting premise and excerpt.

  6. Louise Wise says:

Thanks to Karen for the opportunity to share my latest book with you and your readers. I, too, loved Quantum Leap. They don’t make ‘em like that used to!

As for the granola bars, I’m following a very low-carb diet and these were a life-saver for my sweet tooth!
