Blurb

Montana girl Kristine Stone was strong enough to break out of an abusive marriage, but is she strong enough for the road that lies ahead? For the first time in her life, Kristine finds she has some control over her life. Haunted by her ex-husband and a newly acquired stalker, she decides to leave Montana to work in the U.S. Senate. Kristine issues a moratorium on dating the moment she decides to move to DC. This hardly deters Kadyn Rand, the Air Force Captain who threatens to tear down every wall she’s ever built. Still, someone from her dark past refuses to be ignored, and Kristine finds herself in yet another fight for her life.

THE BROKEN ROAD
The Broken Series Book 1
BY K.S. RUFF

Excerpt

Kadyn parked in the garage beneath his building. We walked back to my apartment, collected Cade, and began our nightly walk.

I barely registered our conversation. I was so worried Kadyn was going to kiss me that I couldn’t think about anything else. My nerves got the best of me when we approached the door. Suddenly, I blurted out, “You know, saying goodnight is always so awkward, especially on a first date. I think we should just kiss and get it over with.”

Kadyn stilled. His face was void of all expression while he silently regarded me.

Heat flooded my cheeks. “Oh, God. Forget I said that. I don’t know why I said that.” I scrambled for my keys. I was dying to get inside my apartment so I could escape any further embarrassment.

Kadyn boxed me in, his arms braced against the door on either side of me. He waited silently.

With a defeated sigh, I turned away from the door.

Kadyn stared at my lips. Slowly, he lowered his mouth until it was mere millimeters from mine. His eyes captured and held mine. “I’m not kissing you to get it over with.” His lips brushed my cheek before settling just behind my ear.

Goose bumps danced across my skin.

Kadyn issued his warning in a low, determined tone. “When I kiss you for the first time, you’re going to want that kiss more than your next breath.”

My heart stopped beating. My brain stopped… my breathing stopped… everything stopped.

Kadyn’s thumb tilted my chin up as he forced me to look at him. He stood there, every inch of his body nearly touching mine while he gazed into my eyes. His hand cupped my neck. His thumb caressed my jaw. His mouth hovered for an eternity.

And, suddenly, I wanted that kiss. My eyelids grew heavy. My body leaned toward his.

He pushed away from the door with a satisfied smile. “Good night, Kri. I had a wonderful night.”

Meet Author K.S. Ruff…

I live in Northern Virginia with my football-crazed husband, two beautiful daughters, and two psychotic Shih Tzus. I teach courses in international relations, peacekeeping, and human security for the American Military University. I’m addicted to coffee, dark chocolate, reading, and writing; although not necessarily in that order. Reading will always be my first love. Writing appears to be edging out coffee for second place, unless it’s morning. In the morning, it’s coffee. I haven’t a clue what’s going on around me when I’m writing. The house could be burning down, and I wouldn’t even notice. I’m counting on my husband to save the children and the dogs. More than anything, I want my readers to FEEL something. I love it when you growl at my protagonist, when you hold your breath in anticipation, when your heart stumbles against your chest, and when you laugh until you cry. That’s what I strive for. I want to make you laugh so hard in the middle of the night that your husband thinks you’ve finally gone mad.

Good morning, K.S., and welcome to Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! I love second chance at love stories like this one. Kri clearly needs a man like Kayden, a protector who will love her unconditionally. I didn’t have a clam linguine recipe and can’t wait to try it, too. Thanks for sharing your story and recipe with us today!

  2. Kathleen Bylsma says:

A very interesting premise and excerpt!
My sister teaches international real a tions, too! Coincidence!
I’ll take the linguine, you keep the clams! Wink!
    Thanks, Karen and K.S.

  3. Helen Rodin Drake says:

    Hi KS,
Your book sounds like a great read!

Your recipe sounds easy enough for me to make.

    • Kimberly says:

Hi Helen! I hope you will give the recipe a try. I cooked this recipe for book club once. Two of the ladies said they didn’t like clams and nearly passed on the dish (thankfully I cooked pesto shrimp as a second option). However, they both tried the clam linguini and ended up going back for seconds. I have yet to serve this dish to anyone who doesn’t go back for seconds. It’s that good!

  4. Bonnie Gonzales says:

Hay KS how you like to make your readers feel, boy that really describes how into a book I get, and when Iam being brought to tears my nostrils pinch together, weird huh? I would love to win your book.

    • Kimberly says:

I’m right there with you Bonnie! Books that make me laugh out loud or send me reeling into an ugly cry…. they’re the ones that stick with me long after I’ve ready them!

  5. Kimberly says:

Hi Karen! Thanks so much for sharing The Broken Road and my clam linguini recipe with your readers. This recipe is mentioned in all five books in The Broken Series. It’s Kadyn’s favorite dish, so Kri cooks it regularly for him. I cook this dish several times a year. It’s our “go to” recipe for New Year’s Eve. Sometimes I’ll toss in fresh clams, but my kiddos prefer the minced version. I hope you enjoy the recipe and the book. Merry Christmas everyone! – K.S. Ruff

  6. Eileen AW says:

Thank you for joining us and sharing your book. Interesting premise and excerpt. Thanks you also for the recipe. I’ll pass it on to my hubby who will love it.

    • Kimberly says:

      Hi Eileen,
This recipe is one of my husband’s favorites, which is what gave me the idea to incorporate it into the book. I have yet to meet anyone who tries this dish who doesn’t go back for seconds. It is really good. Enjoy! – K.S.
