Novel Gems ~ 03-26-13 ~ Killing Secrets by Karen Docter

Welcome to Novel Gems ~ Killing Secrets 03-26-13!

I love to sneak a peek into a writer friend’s developing novel. It’s just so much fun watching their story grow and getting the inside scoop.  So every Tuesday until I finish my romantic suspense, Killing Secrets, I’ll share a gem with you ~ a couple of sentences, several paragraphs of a pivotal scene, or a phrase that just made me sigh or laugh out loud or scares me or…well, you get the picture.

A bit of set up for today’s gem….

Rachel has bolted and Patrick is beating himself up for upsetting her…and that’s all you’re getting!

Happy Reading!

“You two are quarreling, aren’t you?” his mother said into his ear.  “That’s why Rachel’s not sleeping.”

Patrick looked through the leaded glass in his back door in time to see lightning strike a couple of miles away.  He jumped when the thunder crashed through the house seconds later.  “How do you know she’s not sleeping?”

His mother snorted.  “She creeps down the stairs in the middle of the night to sit on the side porch.  Two of the stairs squeak, you know.”

He did know.  His dad caught him sneaking out of the house a couple of times as a teenager before he accepted he’d never pull one over on his policeman father and decided to fly right.

So Rachel had gone back to sitting on the porch late at night.  Without him.  Did that mean he’d completely destroyed her ability to share her problems with him, or was there another reason for her new restlessness?  He wanted to believe she desired him as much as he did her, but he had no illusions now.  If she weren’t still upset about what happened between them the night before his parents’ return, she was devastated by what he’d just done.  He’d seen the bleak look in her eyes before she ran away.

….see you next Tuesday with another NOVEL GEM.
