TRIPLE TREAT WEEK!!
**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with JONI HAHN
Editorial Note to my Readers: We have an extra special week in store for you! Joni is sharing all three of her D.I.R.E. Agency novels with us this week, so check back so you don’t miss one!
Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.
I’ve been married to my real-life superhero for… well, not long enough. We both grew up in San Antonio and as children, even went to the same church. But, we never met until the night we started dating.
I have two grown children that I adore, and I adopted a son-in-law last year whom I love like my own. I work fulltime in accounting/human resources and enjoy movies, reading, and going to concerts.
1. How did you get started writing?
Many years ago, my sister had a poem published. Shortly thereafter, my brother had a magazine article published. When that happened, it hit me: Hey, back in high school, I went to UIL regional competition in writing and I won a writing award in middle school. Maybe I have some writing talent in my genes.
One day, I received a community education newsletter from my local school district. I signed up for a beginner fiction-writing class. The instructor told me about RWA and I joined shortly thereafter.
That was a very long time ago, when my children were young. I’ve written off and on since, but became serious about publication in the last year or two.
- 2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write sci fi romance and contemporary romantic comedy. I love all of the Marvel and DC superhero movies. Larger than life superheroes riding in on their shields, hammers, motorcycles, etc. are what romantic entertainment is all about. What romance reader doesn’t like to be swept away by a hot superhero that can’t be defeated?
As for the romantic comedy, I have a very warped, sarcastic sense of humor that runs in the family. I’m surrounded by novice comedians so naturally, humor shows up in my writing.
3. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
Most of the time, it’s my current work in progress. Right now, while I’m promoting my first series, I mull over promotion possibilities and the duties that go with them. If I’m between books, I’m thinking about plot ideas. If I’ve had a bad day at work, I go over all the things I wish I could’ve said.
4. What is your favorite part of writing?
Fast draft! It doesn’t have to be perfect at this point, just my creativity and imagination spewing out of me. Anything is possible – until my editor gets a hold of it.
5. What is your least favorite part of writing?
Content edits. I whine the entire time.
6. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who would they be and why?
Hmmm, I guess Denzel Washington for my father. He seems to be a very honorable man. He’s been married to his wife for a long time and has found a way to be one of the most popular celebrities in Hollywood yet stays out of the spotlight. He does some great charitable work for the Fischer House Foundation. Anyone that supports wounded vets and their families is very high on my list.
As for my mom, I think Reba McEntire. She has a big heart, never meets a stranger, is very ambitious, and has a great clothing line. I’d be surrounded by music all the time. Very cool.
7. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
For this superhero series, I love superhero movies and I’m also a long-time fan of Suzanne Brockmann’s Navy SEAL books. Put the two together and…tada!
Ideas just hit me – all the time. My mind is constantly going.
8. Tell me about your ideal reader.
Someone that reads a book just to be entertained and get away for a while. Someone that’s game for anything.
9. What is your “go to” routine that helps you get in the mood to write? Special beverage? Music? Etc.
It’s early morning, after I’ve had at least nine hours of sleep the night before. I eat two beef fajita and egg tacos for breakfast. I’m wearing my yoga pants, a baggy t-shirt and socks. A glass of iced tea is on the Spurs coaster to the left of my computer. The house is quiet, I’ve got my earbuds in and I’m playing my favorites playlist that includes everything from Daughtry and Nickelback, to Gary Allen, Jason Aldean, and Lionel Richie. My story outline is on the side table, at the ready. If the stars align this way, I can write a straight fourteen hours or so, with small breaks.
10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?
I plan to release Book 4 in The D.I.R.E. Agency Series in late March or early April. It’s the story of the agency’s next superhero, Riordan St. James, who is briefly introduced in Book 3.
