A Copper Mills Novella

Falling in love was not on the agenda.

Advertising executive Callista Fontaine has never backed down from a challenge and isn’t about to give in now. Taking over the operation of a small farm while her sister recovers from a spinal cord injury seems like the right thing to do, until she comes face to face with a dozen or so very smart goats, and a henhouse filled with more attitude than eggs.

Physiotherapist, Kevin Baker prides himself on getting his patients back up and running—literally—and is more than comfortable with being the guy everyone looks to for help. But the woman he most wants to impress doesn’t want or need his assistance and he’s challenged to find a way into her heart.

When a modern day damsel doesn’t need a knight in shining armor…

Will love still work if they’re standing shoulder to shoulder? And what kind of magic will it take to keep her from going back to the city?

Hi Karen, thanks a bunch for inviting me to share my new project with your readers!

I feel like a professional ball player sliding into home after a sprint around the bases. Whewf what a ride this book had been!

When I was asked to join a group of writers embarking on starting a “shared world project” I first had to ask, what it was. Turns out a shared world is when many different authors write in the same setting, and this group had created a fictional Arizona town for the backdrop.

Okay, sure, I could do that. But wait. This was to be novella length book, which means under 40,000 words. Hmmm. My books are generally closer to 90,000 words. Could I tell a whole story and wrap it up well in such a short space? Sure, why not?

But then the last speed bump. These novellas were to be Contemporary Romance. Again, hmmm. I write Romantic Suspense and Women’s Fiction. Could I pull off a romance without any mystery or great personal journey? Good question.

When I finally committed to stepping outside my comfort zone, I put my fingers on the keys and magic happened. A story rattled its way into being. A love story about a woman who grows as a person, and a man who adjusts to her idiosyncrasies in a way that had me grinning a time or two while I wrote it… and I confess, fanning myself after the shower scene.

Turns out writing a Contemporary Romance is in my wheelhouse.

When my favorite beta reader said it was the best thing I’ve ever written, and my editor said she was adding it to her slim collection of “keepers,” my heart swelled to bursting, and now I’m super excited for Callista Goes Country to get into the hands of readers… I hope the story keeps them up way later than they’d planned, and gives them sweet dreams after the last page is turned.

Good morning, Kathryn, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. I love the concept of this novella and really love the goat on the cover. Having had goats, it touched a little place in my heart. I love that the heroine doesn’t need rescuing! What’s a hero going to do? 🙂 Thanks for sharing your book with us today!

Love that you are stretching into contemporary. Closer to what I read than the dark stuff. The story looks interesting – I love novellas to break up long books and give me a quick happy ending. Thank you for sharing!

      Thanks, Samantha!
Funny thing, I wasn’t sure I would like writing a book without a deep dark mystery in it, and was surprised in the end by how much I really did. 😀
