The life of a playboy pilot most definitely has its ups and downs…quite literally and figuratively. The lack of attachment and platinum membership in the mile-high club can be satisfying, but I find it’s lonely, never having anyone to go home to.

No matter how I look at it, my taking-it-easy outlook on life seems perfect. What becomes a problem is when punches are thrown one stupid night and suddenly — I, a big-shot pilot — can’t see.

Doctor of Ophthalmology may be my title, but ophthalmologist-on-call with the local emergency room is what pays the bills. Late nights, long hours, and constantly changing shifts is tiresome, but it’s a means to an end.

My dreams of owning my own practice and caring for patients on my terms is a passion I’ll pursue eventually. For now, I have to settle for unexpected injuries and patients who open my eyes to new possibilities, even when they refuse to open theirs…

Character Interview

1. What is your name? Do you have a nickname?

I’m Dawson, and my last name is pronounced Kaa-ja-mar-eck…Dawson Kaczmarek. My friends call me Dawx.

2. Who is your best friend? What kinds of things do you do when you’re together?

Carter Clynes is one of my best friends. I enjoy hanging out at a nice bar with him and some other pilots.

3. If you have a family, how do you get along with them? If you don’t, are there people in your life that you consider family? How do you get along with them?

Sadly, my dad is in a nursing home. He has dementia. I don’t get to see him much with my flight schedule, but I’m hoping to change that soon.

4. Do you have a birthmark? Scars? Where is it? How did you get it?

I do now! Took a punch to the eye with a piece of glass. Cut open my cheekbone and I’ve got stitches.

5. When you’re angry, what do you do? Where do you go? How do you deal with your anger?

I like to punch things…But in all seriousness, I usually lay low and just let things go.

6. A penguin walks up to you, right now, wearing a sombrero. What does he say to you and why is he here?

Remember that time you got your nickname, Dawx? Yeah, you’ve probably had the same amount of alcohol if you’re seeing a penguin in a sombrero…

7. What’s the one thing you’re afraid of losing?

My sight.

8. What makes you laugh out loud?

This new doctor I met is cute and funny…

9. What’s your favorite food?

Tacos and beer!

10. What’s the one thing you want out of life that you don’t think you can have? Why can’t you have it?

I’m not relationship material, or rather able to settle down. The lifestyle of a playboy pilot doesn’t work out for most of us. Carter managed to do it, but he was lucky.
