Family Life Fiction
BY SHIRLEY ANN WILDER
Colin Peterson idolized his older brother, the Ob-Gyn doctor, who filled in as a father figure when Colin was growing up. His brother brought joy to many people as he delivered precious babies to them, even though Gary and his wife suffered many miscarriages until they finally had a perfect little girl. When Colin spots an exact image of his niece and begins to ask questions, he learns about the past betrayal, lies and manipulation which almost destroys his chance for love and happiness. Can two families survive and more importantly, can two small girls find a secure home and love?
Dr. Gary Peterson tried to control his trembling hands. He shouldn’t even be in the operating room. It was one of those nights when everything that could go wrong was going wrong. Colorado was experiencing a storm bringing winds, snow, sleet, downed trees and multiple car accidents throughout the area. Idiots were driving at unsafe speeds as if the sun was shining and they weren’t in the beginnings of a blizzard.
October, even for Colorado, it was a little early for snow in the Rockies. They’d encountered several accidents driving to the small community hospital. Sandra had felt funky, her words, not his, most of the day and by seven o’clock, his wife had begun serious labor even though she was six weeks from her due date.
He’d barely gotten into the house when she’d met him with the look of fear and stress on her pretty face. In view of the miscarriages she’d already experienced during the past five years, she wasn’t taking any chances. They’d been hopeful this time. The last sonogram had shown the baby was progressing normally and Sandra had felt fine.
The hospital was in a chaotic mode as one of the OB-GYN doctors had crashed his car and was in the emergency room with a broken wrist, a head wound and other injuries not yet determined. The only other doctor on hand was a bright and capable young man. He assured Gary he’d do everything he could to take care of the baby and Sandra.
That didn’t give Gary peace of mind when it was his wife involved.
He’d had every intention of staying by Sandra’s side until he’d been summoned to fill in for the broken wrist. A young girl who’d evidently been living on the streets had been brought in by a friend or maybe her boyfriend. They had literally dumped her off and fled. The girl was in premature labor and distress.
“I can’t have a baby. I don’t even have a place to stay,” she kept repeating. She was probably no older than nineteen and while the nurse was trying to get the needed information from her, it became obvious, the paper work would have to wait. She was bordering on toxemia and in a great deal of pain. If Gary didn’t do a C-section, the girl could die and the baby didn’t have much chance either.
Gary ordered his brain to connect with the task at hand as he scrubbed up in preparation. He’d managed to snag an anesthesiologist and a nurse he’d worked with on many occasions. A skeleton crew, but it was an unusual circumstance. His mind was on his own laboring wife who’d done everything right. Sandra wanted her baby while this girl kept wailing she couldn’t give birth.
Well, that ship has already sailed.
Shirley Ann Wilder has always loved books, reading and writing. Knowing she had stories to tell, she dabbled, but wasn’t serious about writing until all her four children were raised. She wrote, submitted and spent quite a few years perfecting her craft. Joining Romance Writers of America helped with giving her the confidence to keep trying and the companionship of other writers. Now the author of five published romantic suspense novels, Shirley Ann just keeps writing the next book and the one after that. Double Vision is full of passion, emotion and discovery. It is hoped that the reader will enjoy the journey of the Peterson family and Colin’s quest for true love.
