The Bloodline Series Book 3

Thank you, Karen, for inviting me to your blog and featuring my book, Hot Blooded, Book 3, The Bloodline Series.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: hobbies (besides writing), where you live (generally), your family, and pets – in 50 words or less:

I share a Kentucky horse farm with the love of my life and lots of wacky critters. My children are grown. I have three grandchildren, life’s greatest reward. I enjoy traveling, reading, the outdoors and anything to do with water or woods.

  • What do you write and what genre do you favor?

I write mostly cozy romantic mysteries. I published Gold Lust Conspiracy, an award-winning historical conspiracy romance about a young widow during the 1890’s Alaskan gold rush. My granddaughter, Harley Nelson and I co-wrote two children’s middle-grade mysteries. They are Freckle Face & Blondie and The Thinking Tree.

My mysteries are set in rural horse country in Kentucky, a place similar to where I live. There are so far ten books in The Bloodline Series, starting with Parsley, Sage, Rose, Mary & Wine. Two stand-alone mysteries are God Father’s Day and Madam Mom, about descendants of mobsters.

I weave a spoonful of little-known Kentucky history into most of my books, since I have a fascination for the subject. Kentucky is known best for fast race horses and incredible bourbon. Historically, Daniel Boone and Abe Lincoln are most famous, along with quite a few country music stars and actors. Most people are unaware of the state’s scandalous history, when Newport, Kentucky was run by The Cleveland Mob and was a mecca for illegal gambling and more.

  • When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was six and read Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott. She and Nellie Bly were my childhood heroes.

  •  Who are your favorite authors?

I have so many, it’s difficult to say. Janet Evanovich is responsible for me embarrassing myself laughing out loud on several airplane rides. I write everything Debbie Macomber writes. Tari Lynn Jewett, Leanna Morgan and Vicki Batman are amazing writers. I’m presently reading Lynn Gentry, another awesome writer.

  • How do you approach starting a new book?

When inspiration spurs my attention, I mull over the general idea, plot and characters in my head to the point where I can’t stand it any longer. It’s time to draft the book. I force myself to write a page about each character. This information may or may not filter into the book, but it’s the basis of the character’s traits and helps me understand how they’ll react to situations I put them in. I create a general outline, subject to change as the story develops. This becomes chapters, with a general idea what’s going to occur in each. By then, characters have kept me awake at night writing scenes in my head. I simply put them into place.

  • Do you characters really talk to you?

Continually, even in my sleep. They won’t shut up.

  • If you could jump into a book and live in that world, which would it be?

I jump into whatever books I’m writing and my character co-inhabit my life. I love living in my own world, but am also fascinated with American history and how it affects today’s world.

  • In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?

I love Janet Evanovich’s humor. She’s probably a great person to work with.

  • In your opinion, what do you think makes a good story?

Compelling characters, conflict and emotion

  • What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Just Do It!

  • What type of hero do you prefer, and why?

I enjoy writing stories about normal guys, with great or redeemable values, thrust into a bad situations. My hero must be willing to take a risk.

Silly Stuff – tell us which you prefer.

Classical or pop? Both

Horror or romance? Romance definitely

John Wayne or Gary Grant? I like both

Muscle shirt or button down?
Super soft, flannel shirt with sleeves cut out.

Pecs or abs? abs

Reality TV or Sitcom? Definitely sitcom

The Classics or a New York Times Best Seller? NYBS
