Damn, she thought. The pen must be out of ink. She tossed it into the wastebasket beneath the table, scrounged in her backpack, and came up with another but that one wouldn’t write either. After trying two more she determined the Moleskine wouldn’t accept anything other than the Blackwing pencil. Like the notebook, she had never tried using the pencil if the Lead in Her Head didn’t transform her into Lady Blackwing.
She retrieved the pencil from a pouch in the backpack and poked it into the electric pencil sharpener to put a point on it. It didn’t matter how many times Mercedes sharpened it; the pencil never got any shorter.
Thinking “Here goes nothing,” she put the pencil to the paper.
And stopped. Because the Lead in Her Head tingled.
That was odd. Unprecedented. The imperative to write always came as a burning sensation, so overwhelming as to make any other activity impossible and so irritating that all she wanted to do was make it stop. The only effective response was to give in and write whatever flooded her brain at that moment.
While not something Mercedes would want to live with, this tingling wasn’t as unpleasant. Maybe this would be a short, perhaps even relaxing writing session. Then she might get some sleep.
