Victoria James Mystery Novella 1

A double murder in Bennettsville? The most excitement that sleepy town had seen in recent years was after a debutante crashed her car into the town fountain.

Victoria James Mystery Novella 1

Victoria James pulled up as close as she could to the white columned Greek Revival mansion. About a dozen cars from the local Bennettsville sheriff’s department as well as cars from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and three nearby counties surrounded the scene with their blue lights flashing in the middle of the hot Georgia afternoon.

She parked her vehicle and tried to push her way through the throng of law enforcement.

“I’m sorry ma’am, but you can’t,” started one of the deputies from another county.

“It’s o.k.,” interrupted Deputy Jefferson Hawes of the Bennettsville Sheriff’s Department, who saw her pull up. “You can’t stop Victoria James when she’s on a story. I’ll handle Ms. James’ requests.”

The other deputy nodded backed away, and Victoria smiled at Jeff.

“What took you so long, Vic?”

“Couldn’t get past all of the police cars, Jeff. What is going on?”

Jeff sighed.

“We were trying to keep this one quiet,” said Jeff.

Victoria laughed.

“Then, you‘ve failed miserably. Besides you should know you can’t keep anything quiet in this town. People know when I wash my underwear and what color it is. I got a phone call the minute three deputy cars passed Myra Evans’ house.”

“Good old Myra. God love her,” he replied.

“You know you really should hire her. I think she solves most of your cases, you know.”

“Shh. That’s between you and me, but it’s going to take a lot more than the town busybody to solve this one. And that is off the record so don’t quote me on that.”

“Mysterious, are we?”

“No, but I can’t let you leak any details on this one. That crime scene is nothing like we’ve seen before, and I’m not letting you in there this time.”
