THE LAST GOODNIGHT
Blood Ties, The Logans
BY KAT MARTIN
A thrilling new suspense novel from the bestselling author of The Perfect Murder that fans of Jayne Ann Krentz and Laura Griffin won’t want to miss! A cold case is heating up, and with another body turning up, one woman is hot on the trail of a killer…with the help of the rancher who hired her to deliver justice.
When Kade Logan said goodbye to his estranged wife eight years ago, he never thought it would be the last time he saw her alive. Now her car has been hauled out of a nearby lake and Kade is determined to track down the man who murdered her. Enter Eleanor Bowman, a talented private investigator who’s about to stir up a hornet’s nest on his Colorado ranch.
With old scandals still buzzing about his late wife’s many affairs and new violence erupting, Kade is faced with the discovery of another beautiful woman’s body. Are the two killings linked? Who is the man who seduced, then murdered both victims? Ellie believes they are dangerously close to the truth.
From corporate Denver high-rises to posh Vail mansions, Kade and Ellie sense the killer is closing in again, and this time Ellie is the target. Kade must risk everything to save the woman he’s coming to love—before she becomes the next one to die . . .
Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full-time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.
My name is Kat Martin. I was raised in Bakersfield, California, but have lived in rural Montana for the last 26 years. I winter in Prescott, Arizona. Best of both worlds. I have written more than 80 novels, starting with historical romance, now writing romantic thrillers. I have been on the New York Times bestseller list over 20 times, something I’m extremely proud of. When I’m not writing, I love to travel, especially to Europe. I love staying at expensive hotels and eating at gourmet restaurants. Of course, living in Montana, I love the outdoors, as well.
1. What appeals to you about the genre you write?
I love learning new things and a great deal of research is involved in writing thrillers. I also love romance. I feel the two combine perfectly in a romantic thriller.
2. Are you a plotter or a pantser (one who writes “by the seat of your pants”)?
I started as a plotter. I wrote long outlines and knew the story from beginning to end. As my books got more complicated, I had to be more flexible. Now I know the beginning and certain parts of the middle, but I have to go where the story line takes me. Sometimes I don’t even know quite how I’m going to make it end.
3. What is your favorite part of writing?
The challenge of putting the pieces of the puzzle together, then seeing the finished product. I’m always thrilled when readers like the book.
4. If you had to give up writing and do something else, what would you do instead?
I’ve always said I would like to have been an astrophysicist. I don’t think I was ever smart enough for that career!
5. What’s your favorite meal of the day?
6. Which are your favorite characters to write, the female characters or the male characters? Why?
Male characters are always my favorite. I generally start with them and then find them a mate, but not always. I like strong men and so they are the focus of the story, at least in the beginning.
7. If you had a superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?
Whatever power it would take to bring peace and prosperity to the world.
8. Many writers dream of having the ideal location to write. If you could live anywhere in the world or live a particular lifestyle, where would you be answering these questions right now?
From my desk in Prescott, AZ where I currently am for the winter. As I said, I have the best of both worlds. Delicious views from both my offices and complete privacy, which is the way I like to write best.
9. Do you have any rejection stories to share? Reviews that meant something special to you?
When I started, my first book was rejected by every publisher in New York. My last hope was a new publisher, a division of Crown that had started their first romance line. They loved the book, bought it for a pittance, but made it the lead title for their new Pageant Books line. It launched my career before the company went broke and I had to start all over again.
Regarding reviews–I’m excited that my new book, THE LAST GOODNIGHT just got a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly! It is a thrill as they are very hard to get.
10. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?
The LAST GOODNIGHT is a cold case murder mystery set on a ranch in Colorado. The murder happened 8 years ago but asking questions sets the killer off on a new and dangerous path. It’s a story jam-packed with action and suspense. Kade and Ellie both risk their lives to find the killer before he kills them. The book is out October 26th. After that, Gage Logan’s story is next, THE LAST MILE, out May 31st.
