Kinsley Hayes, Character Interview

What one word best describes you?

Oh, goodness. Do I have to pick just one? Indecisive 😁.

What are you passionate about these days?

I love helping diabetic and pre-diabetic children. I’m aspiring to be a diabetic coach/counselor upon graduating with my Masters. Helping kids cope with needles, bullying, lifestyle and food changes makes me feel like I can make a difference in their lives. Being a kid is hard enough. Being a diabetic is hard, too. Putting those together, yeah….

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m not as mean or self-centered as the rumor mill claims. I’m dedicated and simultaneously shy. Bad combo for some, I guess.

You just won a huge lottery. What is the first thing you’d buy?

Crap. Another decisive question … hmmm. I’d buy my own place.

Who should play you in a film?

I’ve been told I have an Alyssa Campanella vibe when I pull out all the stops, but in a movie, I think I’d say Holland Roden for a more daily pace. She’s so versatile.

Do you play any sports?

I’m a sprinter on the women’s track team at my university.

What would we find under your bed?

Oy. Probably those lost socks and undies I misplaced when folding my laundry.

What is something you want people to know about you?

Dedication to my sport, my major and moonlighting as a bartender sucks up most of my free time. It’s not that I don’t want friends or relationships. I’m bad at them because of my commitments. Makes for a lonely life, though.

Tell us about your greatest achievement.

Between high school and college track meets, I’ve earned over one hundred cumulative medals and ribbons.

What was the scariest moment of your life?

Jeez. Let me see … to name a few: meeting a killer in an elevator, being assaulted by an Inferno biker, being threatened by the leader of the Inferno bikers, becoming the target of a hitman, getting mixed up with crime syndicate, Nightshade’s, leader and a disgraced Navy SEAL at the same time. My life is a hot mess.

Is there a piece of advice that you have received that has really stuck with you? If so, what was it?

Don’t make excuses for someone else’s misbehavior. Quit running to my father to coddle me through life’s hardships. And to stop dating immature boys if I want a lasting relationship.

If you could apologize to someone in your past, what would you say?

I’d apologize to my friend, Sara, for never realizing sooner that she was being abused by her husband. I could’ve maybe helped her get free of him. I should add ending domestic violence to my passions.

Excerpt

My friends rushed toward the enormous balcony overlooking the pool below, the beach beyond. I swallowed and stayed away from the glass banister. My heart pounded in my chest, and I snapped up the first flute of champagne that passed my way.

“I thought I’d have to take one of those off your tray as an excuse to say hello.”

My eyes closed at the way my pounding heart increased in speed at Klive’s voice over my shoulder. His body heat radiated close to my back. He came around to my front as I managed to open my eyes to a much better view than the one that made me feel I’d fall to my death. Wow, he looked good in a tuxedo! A single red rose pinned to lapel. One hand in his pocket, the other held a glass of what looked like Crown. Damn.

He chuckled. Guess I accidentally said that aloud.

“The sentiment is mutual, love. I thought you were lethal in leather pants. I swear you are intent on killing me. The only thing missing is a gun strapped to your thigh in this dress. Who says you need a knife-wielding psycho to protect you?”

I smiled at all the above. My breath hadn’t quite caught up with to my mouth just yet.

Klive removed the rose from his lapel and tucked the petals between my hair and ear. The fingers of his free hand brushed my bare shoulder.

“You shouldn’t touch me, sir. I can’t handle it. I can barely breathe as it is. You smell so good.”

“So do you, love. You shouldn’t reveal such things, or you’ll tempt me to touch you further.”

“Holy shit,” I whispered as the backs of his fingers tested the bare skin of my shoulder again.

“If that’s what happens with my fingers, I wonder what would happen if I kissed you there.”

“Now it’s you who shouldn’t think such things, or you’ll tempt me to let you.” My voice was far too wispy and weak.

He looked around us. “Wherever has everyone trickled off to?”

I shook my head, unable to answer. He was right, we were alone.

“You know what I find fascinating, my sweet?” He ran his fingers up my shoulder, over my collar bone, up my throat. Klive stepped closer to seal the little space between us. My head tilted to look up at him. His eyes watched his fingertips prance over my pulse.

“What?”

“How afraid of heights you are, yet you don’t even notice I have you against the railing of this balcony.”

I gasped with a glance over my shoulder. “Klive!” My arms flew around his neck while his hand around my back pulled me flush against him.

“I’d never let you fall, but let you feel like it? Maybe. Are you afraid?”

“Should I be?” I asked, still too breathy, but also from fear robbing the strength from my voice.

His face dipped. My head fell back as his nose ran the length of my throat. His breath rushed against my skin. I no longer noticed how scary high up we were. My eyes closed because he never kissed my skin. Instead, he gave the smallest of laughs that sent thrills and chills all over my skin that prickled when the breeze lifted the tips of my hair over the edge of the balcony.

We ripped apart when we heard laughter.
