Mail Order Bride Series Book 1

After a disastrous first marriage, Will Jeffers hasn’t the stomach for another emotionally entailed union. All he needs is a wife to cook, nurse his mother, and look after the homestead. But good women are few and far between in Colorado mining country. A mail order bride is the perfect solution.

Amelia Johannasen is running for her life. Her mother has decided it’s time her daughter joined the family business, shattering Amy’s dreams of marrying for love. Imagine her surprise when she is mistaken for Will Jeffers mail order bride. She’ll take it!

With a head for numbers and talent for spinning tall-tales but no notion of how to cook or nurse a manipulative old woman, how can she reach the heart of a man once burned so badly he’s sworn off love?

Character Q&A
An Interview with Amelia Johannasen

KLW: Er, Amelia—

Amelia: Amy, please.

KLW: Of course. Amy. Does your mother love you?

Amy: Yes! What a horrid question.

KLW: I know this is difficult, but what on earth would possess a woman to expect her daughter to… to… well, join the family business?

Amy (tears fill her eyes): I’m not sure. But, I know she loves me. She just needs time to—

KLW: Time for what, Amy? Mothers don’t expect this sort of thing from their daughters.

Amy: I will not listen to another word. If you cannot ask a friendlier question, this interview is over!

KLW: Certainly. How do you find Will’s mother?

Amy: She’s a lamb.

KLW: Have you ever traveled before?

Amy: Mama and I moved extensively—when I was younger. Most notably, St. Louis, Denver. I have vague memories of a grandiose house somewhere, but I must have been very young at the time. Mostly, I remember how frightened she was.

KLW: Frightened? Of what?

Amy: I-I don’t know. (Jaw tightened) I wish she’d just marry that nice Mr. Oakley. (She blinks) I mean, I think he’s sweet on her.

KLW: In what way?

KLW: Er, where did your knowledge of numbers come from?

Amy: I don’t know. My father—I don’t know.

KLW: Your father? Is that what you were going to say?

Amy: No. I don’t know.

KLW: Where is your father?

KLW: Amy?

KLW (clears throat): Okay. Well, thank you for such an enlightening visit.

Amy (perked up): You’re welcome. Thank you.
