An Anthology of Short Stories
From Bestselling Authors

By Sylvia McDaniel

Sylvia’s story is about a barrel racer riding in her last race and not knowing where her life is going next. Her grandmother makes homemade quilts as my own grandmother once did. She gives Sadie a new quilt to sleep under and tells her that the man she dreams of will be the love of her life. But Sadie doesn’t believe the old wives tale and is shocked what the dream reveals when she returns to the wild days of Deadwood.

Is it possible to love someone in another time? Are dreams real?

“Are you ready for your life to change?” her grandmother asked.

A sigh escaped her. “I’m tired of being out on the road all the time. So yes, the time for me to do something different is here. Currently, I have no idea what I’m going to do.”

A grin graced her grandmother’s face. “Why don’t you move to Deadwood.”

“Grandmother, I’m a stranger here,” she said.

“After this weekend, you’ll meet the rest of the family.”

“Maybe,” she said, thinking she really had no direction to go anymore. Her favorite horse was retiring and the thought of riding the circuit without her or training another one, was too much. While she had some great years racing barrels, it was time to retire.

“Listen, I’m going to bed. The doors are locked and in the morning, we’ll have breakfast and then I’ll have to go check on the horses,” she said. On the way into town, they dropped them off at the rodeo grounds and her trainer was staying with them tonight.

Her grandmother rose from the table. “Before you go, there’s something I made for you.”

The bag she insisted on carrying was sitting on the couch. Hurrying over she pulled out a beautiful quilt and carried it to Sadie.

“There is an old wives tale that if you sleep under a new wedding ring quilt, whoever you dream of is the man you’ll marry.”

Sadie started to protest when she held up her hand.

“Hear me out.” She paused. “My ancestors are here in this town. This hotel is known for having spirits and you’re at a turning point in your life. Maybe you don’t believe in this fable, but give it a try. To please your old grandmother, sleep under the quilt.”

Brushing her hand against the tiny stitches, Sadie recognized the special blanket had been made with love. “As my only granddaughter it would please me so much if you were to find a man here in Deadwood.”

How could she turn her grandmother down after that impassioned plea? Besides, it was an old wives tale, nothing more.

Standing, she hugged the little old woman she loved. “Thank you grandma.”

The woman’s face filled with love. “This will work.”

“You didn’t tell me there were ghosts here.”

A quick shrug of her shoulders and she said, “There are ghosts everywhere. Pleasant dreams love.”

I love that the sales are benefitting such an awesome charity!! You asked for something about Deadwood, SD. It’s super, super cold there during the long winters – which means I could never live there. It is also ‘home’ to the graves of not just Wild Bill Hickock but also Calamity Jane who moved there during it’s gold rush days. 😀

    • Hi Glenda,
Yes, I can’t wait to see the graves and check out the town. They have a ghost tour, that I really want to go on. I’m sure it’s very cold there in the winter, but hey I’m going in June. Thanks for telling a little something about Deadwood.
