Novel Gems ~ 06-11-13 ~ Killing Secrets by Karen Docter

Welcome to Novel Gems ~ Killing Secrets 06-11-13!

I love to sneak a peek into a writer friend’s developing novel. It’s just so much fun watching their story grow and getting the inside scoop.  So every Tuesday until I finish my romantic suspense, Killing Secrets, I’ll share a gem with you ~ a couple of sentences, several paragraphs of a pivotal scene, or a phrase that just made me sigh or laugh out loud or scares me or…well, you get the picture.

A bit of set up for today’s gem….

Rachel and Amanda are in danger…and that’s all you’re getting!

Happy Reading!

Killing Secrets by Karen Docter

Picking up speed, she dared to look in the rear view mirror to gauge the distance between her and her pursuer.  He was right on their tail.  Literally.  She shouted a warning to Amanda.  “Hang on, baby!”

Her voice was obliterated by the sound of metal grinding against metal when his truck struck.  Her head snapped forward.  The steering wheel shuddered beneath her hands.  Fishtailing on the carpet of hail covering the road, the truck slid sidewise for an unbearable few seconds.  Rachel held on for dear life.  Throat tight with fear, she somehow regained control.

Greg backed off, yet she didn’t dare ease up on the gas pedal until the speedometer topped forty and she’d put several car lengths between them.  She knew it was dangerous but she couldn’t let the bastard close in on them again.  He’d warned her he’d kill her and Amanda before he’d let them go.  She hadn’t quite believed him.

Clamping down on her hysteria, she glanced across the bench seat at her daughter.  “You hurt, baby?”

Amanda’s head jerked back and forth, her small fingers pinched so deep into the teddy’s head they almost touched in the middle.  The little girl might not be injured, but she looked like Rachel felt.  Unhinged.  Terrified.  Did she know it was her father trying to kill them?

….see you next Tuesday with another NOVEL GEM.
