I take a few steps back as I track the ball high in the air. It’s drifting foul along the narrow first base side of the field. I might run out of room to catch it before the field gives way to the stands, but it doesn’t matter where I’m making the play. If I catch the ball, it’s an out.
How high is that wall? I glance back. Totally jumpable. Eyes back skyward, I bound over to the wall, my glove hand outstretched as I hit the dirt with my feet. Another quick look at the wall, and I leap. I stick the landing and take one giant step toward the armrest of the seat behind it to make the play, right as the fan sitting there stands up to reach the ball I’m about to grab.
Her shoulder bangs into my crotch, making me grateful for protection, but it still stuns me enough that I stumble on the armrest. My foot slips into the cupholder, squirting white goo in a stream toward her T-shirt. What is that, sour cream? She drops back into the seat at an awkward angle as I pitch toward her. I throw one arm out to catch myself. It’s either that or I topple over and land on my head in the aisle next to her or onto my side on the cement floor between her seat and the wall. Hopefully it keeps me from putting all of my weight on her too. At six feet tall, I’m not a tiny guy.
Her hands press firmly against my chest, fully supporting me. “Whoa, there. I got ya,” she says, flustered but not strained. Light-blue eyes that nearly match the wings of the Snowhawks logo meet mine, and man, this sure feels like I won the falling on a fan lottery.

Rosalie Pease is the pen name of cozy mystery author Rosie Pease. A native Rhode Islander, Rosalie has also lived in Vermont, New York, and Ohio. She uses the places she’s traveled to as inspiration for the settings of her books, pulling the theater from one, the cider mill from another, the river from another to create fictitious towns that feel ripe for romance.
She collects Funko Pops of the Hunger Games, Doctor Who, DC TV, and Marvel variety, with a few others thrown in for fun. Her desk is a mess, but she can find everything on it, so it works for her.
