Lieutenant Slade Lake eyed the dial of his watch for the third time in as many minutes.
The faint sound of the plane’s engines faded as four team members approached. Command had asked for a scalpel, not a hammer—a special request from Colonel Kadenski.
His gut, however, told him HQ might be inviting disaster.
Puffs of mist escaped with each breath. Prickles of cold seeped through his gear. Stars winked on the black velvet backdrop of the Arctic sky.
“What’s the plan?”
“Target’s five K to the west. Orders are to get in, out, and head for the rendezvous by 0900 in two days. Intel puts the number of enemies at around thirty.” Slade glanced to his right at his team’s Corpsman Brandon ‘Deacon’ Rickley. “The intel says package may be injured, Deacon.”
“Four to one odds.” A low growl from his right and he shook his head. Of course Pyke was pissy.
“HQ wants this done quietly and quickly. To that effect, we’re the knife they’re sending in.”
His teammates exchanged glances. “Got it. We’re good.”
“Good. Briggs said it would take a little skill to get in undetected. We’re not to engage unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
“What’s so great about this target? Headquarters didn’t give us much to go on.”
He’d wondered the same thing earlier, but he’d been given only the barest of details. Age, basic description, but nothing that jumped out to say they were special or high priority. Of course, the orders has also come from an outside contact. “They gave us enough.” With a muttered curse, he gathered the sling of his rifle and stood. “Radio silence unless absolutely necessary.” Slade shook his head.
With his team half a step behind him, he checked the compass and headed east.
Frozen lichen crunched beneath their feet, breaking the silence of night. Slade shivered beneath the thermal gear he wore. Give me the sweltering heat of Burma or Nigeria any day. It’s too cold for this crap.
