Sometimes you need to get lost to find where you belong.

Getting lost isn’t the best way to start an assignment. Travel writer Meredith Mills has one goal—capture New England Christmas charm in a series of blogs to help save her mother’s boutique travel agency. If her mother can’t get more bookings, Meredith fears another shuttered business and another move. And what Meredith longs for more than anything is roots and a normal life.

Spending the holidays stuck in the glittering decorations, twinkling lights and festive activities in the middle on nowhere in New Hampshire isn’t part of her agenda.

Neither is falling for the laidback pop-up Christmas village’s designer assigned as her guide by the town. She’s used to following a plan and ticking off boxes. But her carefully laid out agenda keeps getting derailed. Especially when the chemistry between them lights up like a Christmas tree.

Then a nor’easter blows through, leaving her stranded in snow while, in Boston, her mother is falling apart. They’re the one constant in each other’s lives. Meredith can’t abandon her. To get the help her mother needs, Meredith must spill their long-kept secret.

Will that spell the end of the magic or the start of a new itinerary for her life?

“My Books Make Readers Hungry”

A comment I often get from readers is that my books make them hungry. Food has always played an important role in my life. It’s the center of family gatherings, and the large helpings of sugar most likely help raise the dopamine and, therefore, the feel-good emotions attached to these gatherings. From Easter chocolate eggs to summer fruit pies to Christmas Yule Log, I can’t think of any holiday without conjuring up images of some special dessert.

As I was thinking about the meaning of food, and why it features so prominently in my books, I realized that it’s not so much about the food as about the community that gathers around the table. I come from a big family, and my grandmother used to make gatherings, especially Christmas, magical. Long tables snaked from the dining room into the living room. Everyone was welcome. I remember a lot of laughter.

In Christmas in Brighton, Meredith isn’t used to community, or to asking or receiving help. Her mother’s illness has made them both keep secrets and depend only on each other. A tight little knot that put too much stress on Meredith growing up. She got used to showing the world an I’ve-got-my-act-together front, while inside her emotions paddled like crazy.

Going to Brighton to help save her mother’s business throws Meredith’s world upside down. For the first time, she experiences what it’s like to be part of a community, and that makes her re-examine her whole life.

I hope this story leaves you feeling cozy—as if you’ve just spent time with friends, snuggled in a blanket and sipping on a cup of hot chocolate (or your favorite beverage  ).

What’s your favorite holiday food memory?
