Lady Blackwing
Character Interview
1. What is your name? Do you have a nickname?
Hi, I’m Mercedes. And I have a sort of nickname. Well, more a moniker. Or, like, my alter ego has a name. It’s Lady Blackwing. Since I’m Lady Blackwing when I write, I guess you could call it a pen name. Or a pencil name, LOL.
2. Who is your best friend? What kinds of things do you do when you’re together?
Oh, I’m so busy with college classes and my job. And I work different shifts so it’s hard to get together with anyone except other kids at the Kaffeteria. When we work the late shift we go to an after-hours club for drinks sometimes. I did get to know a gal on a project I volunteered for but she’s, like, as overcommitted as I am.
3. If you have a family, how do you get along with them? If you don’t, are there people in your life that you consider family? How do you get along with them?
My fam is out of state. We email and text. Phone and video chat not so much. I keep weird hours. I’d have to say these days I’m closer to the other staffers at the Kaffeteria coffeehouse where I work part-time. And my boss. I mean, I don’t really hang with him. But he’s great. He knows we’ve all got other stuff going on and he’s flexible. Like, if we need time off for an emergency or we swap shifts, he’s good with that.
4. Do you have a birthmark? Scars? Where are they? How did you get them?
I do now. I’ve got the point of a Blackwing pencil embedded in my skin right below my ear. I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally poked myself in the head. It didn’t get infected but now, well … when the Lead in My Head wants me to write, there’s no argument. It’ll keep burning, take over my life until I get the words out.
5. When you’re angry, what do you do? Where do you go? How do you deal with your anger?
I try not to get worked up although it’s hard. Because it seems like when there’s something on my mind or something’s bothering me, then the Lead in My Head starts burning and Lady Blackwing takes over. And who knows how that’s going to turn out?
6. If you had to make me a meal right now, without going to the store, what would you find in your refrigerator to feed us?
How do you feel about peanut butter and pickles?
7. What’s the one thing you’re afraid of losing?
Gee, I dunno. I guess these days I’d have to say my Blackwing pencil and the Moleskine notebook I got the same time I got the pencil. I mean, if I didn’t have those, what would I do when the Lead in My Head burns?
8. What makes you laugh out loud?
Some of the memes on social media. There’s this woman on Facebook, Karen Docter. She posts such funny stuff.
9. Has anyone broken your heart? Who was he?
I’m embarrassed to say that yeah, I fell for a guy. Handsome. Charming. A leader. Who turned out to be not at all what he seemed to be. I was warned, too, that he was a player, and I didn’t believe it. So I got no one to blame but my own stupid self..
10. What’s the one thing you want out of life that you don’t think you can have? Why can’t you have it?
I guess I’d like to be free of this Lady Blackwing thing. Like, it does get me in serious trouble. Whatever Lady Blackwing writes, whether it’s something imagined from the past or envisioned for the future, it happens IRL. And that’s scary. I’ve been appalled to find her writing has incited a zombie horde and a werewolf pack. So far the disasters have gotten corrected and good things came out of it. But what if …? I don’t want to think about that.
It’s said of Devorah Fox that she writes outside the box. Its feelings hurt, the box gets up and stomps off. So she writes about that, too.
A multi-genre author, she has written a best-selling epic fantasy series, “The Bewildering Adventures of King Bewilliam,” as well as an acclaimed mystery and a popular thriller, and co-authored a contemporary thriller with Jed Donellie. She contributed short stories to a variety of anthologies, penned several Mystery and Fantasy Short Reads, and has several five-star ghostwriting projects to her name. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she now lives on the Texas Gulf Coast with rescued tabby cats … and a dragon named Inky.

Don’t miss the chance to read this book!
Thanks, Karen. My cold has me feeling crappy but this made me feel better!
I’m sorry you’re still sick, but glad your blog is making you feel better!
Good morning, Devorah, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. I loved the interview with Lady Blackwing. Where can I can one of those Lead in My Head pencils? I could sure use one of those. Although, that would mean I’d need special powers to deal with it so maybe not. The holodeck in my head is challenging enough to manage. LOL I did not know Lady Blackwing is lurking in my FB group. How did she slip past my censors? 🙂 Thanks for sharing your Vella story episode with us today!
You can buy Blackwing pencils on Amazon, of course. But then you’d have to stab yourself. I discovered that getting stabbed with a pencil isn’t all that unusual. But no one who has done that has reported gaining superpowers!
Well, darn! LOL
Hi Devorah!! Thanks so much for sharing your book. Sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out on Vella.
I’m glad you’re intrigued.
Oh oh…stuff a brewing, so to speak…😉
Thanks, Devorah and Karen
Keepin’ things interesting!
