Tyson Walker tugged his Stetson down over his collar against the cold wind that blew off the frozen river. He shrugged deeper into his heavy winter jacket and jogged up the steps into the plain economy hotel where he was staying. Tired, cold, and hungry, he reached for the key from his pocket and strode past the desk clerk to unlock his door.
Small and simple, the room suited a single man completely. Two double beds took up most of the room. A plain dresser and table occupied the rest of the room, and a single-cup coffee station sat on a tray atop the table. “Decaffeinated coffee? They need to restock,” he muttered, and reached for the small bag he’d carried. The pop of the tab on the beer echoed in the room. Tossing aside his hat and coat, he stretched out, kicked his worn cowboy boots off, and wiggled his toes in satisfaction.
Tomorrow night would be the big deal. The main reason he’d come to town was for the charity auction, one that he felt honored to participate in. He reached for his phone and frowned at the blinking light.
“Who the hell would be callin’ me? I told ’em not to bother me,” he grumbled, flipping up the receiver. He quickly dialed up his voicemail and punched in the code. The sultry, seductive tone that filled his ears sent his blood racing to his groin. Fierce and powerful, the need to claim the voice’s owner washed over him.
“Tomorrow, baby,” he muttered as he slid his ring from his finger and tucked it into the band in his hat. He tipped the hat upside down and set it on the dresser next to his half-finished beer.
