​Bren curved her lips into a wicked grin. “I’d like to try out his magic.”

“Male witches don’t have active powers.” Prys said the obvious like reciting a basic rule of physics in class and then felt like an idiot. Of course her best friend knew that and hadn’t meant magic in a literal sense. Heat crept up her cheeks. From missing the jokes. Certainly not from picturing what Bren had been talking about. In vivid, explicit detail. No, not that. She swallowed the last of the sweet past a suddenly dry throat.

“You know what I meant. How long have you two been flirting?”
“That’s not what we do.”

Unless Bren’s definition of flirting included the kind that would happen if stuck in a Regency reenactment. Him giving her looks that made her forget whatever work she’d been obsessing about. Him rushing to hold the door for her because she was constantly hurrying from one client’s disaster to another. Him walking close enough to almost brush against her at Senate events.

While his teasing should’ve given her courage to be brave, to try for something more, she hadn’t. Maybe because of her all-controlling Senator mother or front- page-news rock star brothers. But more likely because she couldn’t string together a coherent conversation around him.

“We don’t flirt.” Prys hoped the finality in her tone would end the conversation. She glanced at the empty napkin, wishing she had more than crumbs to chase away the bitterness in her voice.

“Call it whatever you like. What’s his name?”

“I don’t know.”
