Frankie wandered around her bedroom, her fingers drifting over the top of her dresser. The things she’d brought up earlier comforted her a fraction. The cheval mirror that had been her mother’s, and a steamer trunk she’d brought from home with her mom’s wedding dress and a few other special items packed inside.
Golden light from an oil lamp fell across the room, making the hardwood floor gleam. She stepped across the rag rug she and Kelsi had made for a 4-H project, stopping in front of a family picture hanging on the wall. Taken before her parents’ death, the portrait was the only one the family had ever taken together.
Frankie smoothed her fingertips over their familiar faces. “I miss you, Mama. I miss you, Daddy.”
Tears threatened and she fought back sobs filling her throat. Crying wouldn’t solve anything, and she was a hell of a lot better off than tons of other people. An image of Carl and Faye Jeeves flashed through her head, and she blinked hard to erase the horrible images of her friends dying at her hand.
