The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s didn’t just open; they slammed against the stone interior with a crack that silenced the organ mid-chord.
Derek stood in the doorway, his silhouette cutting through the hazy shafts of light sweetened by incense. Every head in the congregation turned. At the alter Father Collins paused, the gold chalice trembling in his hands.
