SHAW POINT
Shaw Point Collection
BY KAREN LOPEZ
Blurb
When the Great War leaves Martha widowed and heartbroken, will Shaw Point be the sanctuary she needs to start over?
While war rages around the globe, Martha receives news that her husband has made the ultimate sacrifice for it. She has lost her soulmate and the life she has known in Roanoke, VA.
Left with no other choice, the grief-stricken widow accepts an inheritance. An abandoned farm outside the small town of Chatham. Armed with her faith and her only friend, the two women face struggles they have never known before. Will they have the courage to make it through alone, or will they find kinship and support from their new community?

The morning train shuddered along the track heading south and away from Martha Barker’s home in Roanoke. Since August, all her expectations of the future had been buried along with her husband, Daniel. The cost of war on her life had reduced her circumstances. She had little other choice than to explore the country home she had inherited from her late Uncle Lester.
Martha had not rested much during the train ride to Chatham and was certain that Josephine had rested even less. There was not much hope of rest for the next few days. They had vacated the rented flat the night before to allow the new tenant to move in today. The two friends had spent the night at the depot.
***
The first year of marriage, Dr. Daniel Barker was often busy at all hours of the day and night with hospital shifts. He was grateful that Josephine was there with Martha during those long hours. Now, three years later, the two women were facing an unknown future together. Circumstances had propelled them into a new life in an unfamiliar town.
Approaching their stop, the train whistle gave forth a warning signal.
Martha had visited her uncle many times with her mother. Uncle Lester had always met them at the station with his horse and buggy to complete the journey from Chatham station to the family home of Shaw Point, a journey on which she was comfortably sheltered inside giving little thought to direction or landmarks.
Picking up their bags, they made their way through the car and out onto the wooden platform. They were the only travelers to disembark. The station was not busy. There were a few wagons nearby to receive goods from the cargo car. There was no immediate source of conveyance into the countryside. How to secure transportation to Shaw Point was a mystery to Martha.
She shielded her eyes from the mid-morning sun a moment with her gloved hand and whispered a prayer for strength and direction. …
Karen resides in Louisiana. She loves to travel but the Bayou State has always been ‘home’.
Besides travel, her other passions include cooking, reading, and of course writing.

Good morning, Karen, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. I so seldom get to read a story set in this time frame. I’m intrigued by set up and excerpt. I cannot imagine what it was like for the women who lost their men to the war, having to start over. The story promises to be a highly emotional read. Thanks for sharing it with us today!
