Excerpt

Acting out of character, Hunter has defended himself by decking a man before going off to take a shower. The staff are all afraid of what he will do next. Kathryn volunteers to bring him out.

She wanted to bolt from the room. But she remembered the face of the man on the road. She’d seen a bleakness behind his eyes that had wrenched at her heart. No wonder, when you considered the implications of Emerson and Winslow’s callous conversation.

Instead of running away, she crossed the tile floor on unsteady legs and dropped quickly onto one of the benches.

There was no noise from inside the shower room besides the steady dripping of water. And she could see nothing beyond the billowing steam.

“Hello?” she called.

No answer.

“Hello. It’s Kathryn Kelley. Do you remember me? We met while you were on your run. I’m in the locker room.”

She sat staring into the mist, wondering if he had heard. Or if he even remembered her, for that matter, she thought with a jolt. If they’d been feeding him mind-altering drugs, there was no telling what they’d done to him.

After several seconds she saw a form moving indistinctly in the vapor. A tall, man-shaped form. Moving closer. Moving slowly on feet that were silent as a cat. Then he stepped through the doorway and into the locker room, and she couldn’t hold back a gasp. A towel was draped across his shoulders. Otherwise, he was as naked as the day he was born.

She saw her own feeling of shock mirrored on his face as he came to an abrupt halt, staring at her with a mixture of recognition and astonishment. Well, he remembered her, all right. Apparently, their meeting had been as unique for him as it had been for her.

The disbelief vanished as he continued to regard her, standing comfortably with his feet several inches apart. He was tall and intimidating, towering over her where she huddled on the bench. Droplets of water clung to his skin. His dark hair was wet, making it look almost black.

“You were with McCourt,” he said, his features filling with a roiling mixture of emotions before he got control of them.

She struggled to keep her posture relaxed as she looked up at him. He had been compelling in running shorts and a tee shirt. Naked he reminded her of Michelangelo’s David. And he stood with the same unconscious nobility, as if nudity were the norm and she was overdressed in her beige skirt and jade silk blouse. His shoulders were broad, his hips lean, his stomach flat. And his sex was proportioned to inspire some very erotic fantasies.

But this was no time for fantasies or recklessness. One wrong move and she could be in serious trouble. The two of them were alone, and he could hurt her if he wanted, she reminded herself. The thought of rape leaped into her mind, to be dismissed at once. He wasn’t looking at her like a would-be rapist. In fact, he didn’t look as if he were trying to embarrass her or make a point about a woman invading the guys’ locker room. There was no smirk on his face—only an expression that had become carefully neutral.

SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

An editor once accused me of having my heroines spend too much time cooking for my heroes. I tried to pull back on the housewife stuff, but in Hunter it was very appropriate. Hunter has been deprived of any pleasure, including good food. In the book, Kathryn prepares several meals she knows he will like. And she thinks of other food she wants to fix for him in the future, including this delicious casserole.

Some people think of sweet potatoes only as a holiday side dish, but I also like to serve them on a regular basis because they’re sweet and delicious, and they’re an excellent source of beta carotene and fiber.

Since sweet potatoes cook particularly well in the microwave, we often enjoy them baked.  This casserole starts with microwaved sweet potatoes. For a change of pace, try substituting maple syrup for the honey.

3 medium-large sweet potatoes (about 3 cups when mashed)
2/3 cup orange juice
1/2 cup coarsely chopped or diced dried apricots
1/3 cup dark or golden raisins
2 tablespoons mild honey, such as clover
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

To prepare the sweet potatoes:

Pierce the sweet potatoes several times with a knife or fork tines.  Place the sweet potatoes on a plate, arranging them like the petals of a flower.  Microwave on high power for 10 to 14 minutes, or until cooked through, turning the plate 1/4 turn once during microwaving, until tender.  Cool slightly.

To prepare the casserole:

Grasping the sweet potato with a  potholder or paper towel, scoop out the sweet potato flesh using a soup spoon.  Transfer the flesh to a 2-quart microwave-proof casserole, and mash with a fork or potato masher to break up any large lumps.  Stir in the orange juice, and mix well.  Add the dried apricots, raisins, honey, butter and ground ginger, and stir to mix well.

Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly in the casserole.  Microwave on high power, covered, 6 or 7 minutes, or until heated through.

Makes 5 to 6 servings.

  1. I’m definitely going to try this recipe! I like that it isn’t all sweet potato, sugar, more sugar, and marshmallows like so many casseroles! Variety is important! Hunter sounds intriguing!

  2. Good morning, Rebecca, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Fixin’s. I love sweet potatoes and am always looking for new ways to fix it. Quite often, I just bake them and serve with butter, like a baked potato. Like Glenda, I’m not a huge fan of lots of sugar. Can’t wait to read this book, too! Love your books. They all end up on my Keeper Shelf for re-reads. Good thing you don’t listen to your editor because I love feeding my heroes, too. <3 Thanks for sharing your book and recipe with us today!

    1. I am not seeing my replies. But I will assume they are getting here. Thanks for having me. I also bake sweet potatoes in the microwave (so easy) and serve w/ a little butter and reduced sugar pancake syrup. Of course, I now have leftover sweet potato casserole in the fridge from last night.

      1. I’m not sure why my blog didn’t recognize you because you’ve been here before, but after approving the first few, the rest should come through now.

Reduced sugar pancake syrup? Do you just cook it down a bit? Why would you do that? Just asking because I now use Karo Dark Syrup for my syrup because it’s thicker and has a richer taste. Maybe I should change it up with a reduced syrup. 🙂

        1. Okay, you can buy pancake syrup and you can buy regular pancake syrup and also pancake syrup w/ reduced calories. what I have is from Harris Teeter (grocery story you may not have) and is made w/ sorbitol. It’s sugar free. Other one’s I’ve gotten are reduced sugar. This one has 15 calories per 1/4 cup.

  3. I can’t believe you’ve written 20 books and this is the first I’ve heard of you! Excerpt sounds very good as does the recipe.
    Thank you, Karen and Rebecca.

  4. I love just baking sweet potatoes and having them with a little butter. The new book sounds delicious, good luck on the release and thanks for the giveaway!
