Blurb

After a troublous first year at her haunted inn, Andie Rose and her support dog, Aspen, finally settle into the quaint, cozy town of Spirit Lake, Minnesota. Tender green shoots of grass and daffodils peek through the melting snow, promising new life. But things turn deadly when two bodies are discovered two days apart at St. Michael’s cemetery.

Detective Parker, all too used to Andie Rose meddling in his investigations, isn’t at all surprised when she shows up at the crime scene. This time, his new-in-town twin sister is with her, and tempers flare as he warns them to stay out of his way.

But when Andie Rose realizes both victims had recent run-ins with her father, famous thriller author Chandler Langston, she’s dead set to prove her dad’s innocence. But can she clear him before she becomes the next victim?

Excerpt

I swallowed the sudden lump that formed in my throat. Noah Parker was the new detective in Spirit Lake. According to Lily’s counterpart at the front desk, Jade, and Izzy, my 17-year-old genius sous chef, he was hot. I kept my opinion to myself. But his presence here when Max was to arrive at any time spiked my heart rate. Not that I was dating either of them. Even if I wanted to date, the two of them weren’t likely, each for his own reason. But their presence here at the same time made me, shall we say, uncomfortable.

“What does he want?” I asked Lily.

“You.” She grinned and winked.

“Pfft. Aren’t you just a hoot.”

“I can be,” Noah said as he walked into the room.

I waved my hand forward as I pressed my other hand against one last out-of-control curl, smashing it against my head. “Come on in.”

“Thanks, I will.” He sidled up beside me and admired the lake. “The lake is stunning. But you wouldn’t catch me out there.”

“I would hope not.” His presence was so close I could nearly feel the heat from his body; I took a step back and faced him again. “What have I done to deserve this visit? I can’t remember breaking any laws or getting in the way of one of your investigations.” I grinned. “Or did you just miss me?”

“I haven’t seen you for a couple of months. That scares me, like a lot, so I thought I’d do a welfare check.” His eyes danced with amusement.

“Well, lucky for you, I haven’t had any murders to solve for you. Not even a murderer to save you from. Again.”

He laughed. “Each has their own version of events.”

I smiled. I saved his butt from a murderer last winter, and I wasn’t about to let him forget it.

“You’re right,” I said. “Some of us believe the truth and some of you believe what you wish was true. I’m keeping it in my back pocket. Just in case.”

“It?”

“The knowledge of saving you from death.”

He arched his eyebrows. “In case of what?”

“I might need it for leverage someday.”

He nodded and laughed again. “I kinda missed this verbal sparring. No one does it better than you.”

I gave him a deadpan look. “You must lead a boring life, Detective.” He remained quiet, so I spread my arms out. “You came. You saw. I’m alive and well. And yet you linger.” Still quiet, I gave him a sidelong look. “Okay, why are you really here?

STUFFED SQUASH
[Serves 4]

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

2 acorn squash, halved and seeded; lay hollow side down on a sprayed baking sheet (If you cut a small slice from the rounded side of the squash it will sit straighter when you prepare the final dish).

Bake squash for 45 min-1 hour or until tender.

While squash is baking:

Brown 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage with 2 cloves chopped garlic. Drain well and set aside.

Make two cups of long grain/brown rice blend per packaged directions.

Add ground beef/Italian sausage to rice

Add the following (I’m old fashioned and don’t measure mine, so I suggest using whatever amount suits your taste) and mix together:

  • Dried cranberries
  • Fresh, chopped cilantro
  • Olive oil (I use 3 Tbsp)
  • Chopped parsley
  • Salt & pepper
  • Lime juice

       Simmer

When squash is fully baked, transfer squash to a platter or individual plates, hollow side up, and fill with rice/meat mixture. Garnish with parsley.

Side Note: I’ve used butternut squash too, but the acorn allows more room for filling. Either way is yummy!

This meal has made for many happy guests leaving filled and satisfied!

Happy Reading!
