Life has been a challenge lately. I’ve lost pretty much everything except my house. It’s time to take control. If that means letting strangers rent rooms from me, so be it. I’ll lose the house too if I don’t do something, and soon. I need to get my business and personal life back on track.
When the first two rental applicants show up, however, I’m not prepared for my instantaneous reaction to them. They could be just what I need in more ways than one.
Callum
I’m finally out of school and ready to make my own way. My new job is terrific and just what I want to launch my career as a chef. The last thing I need is a distraction from my goal, but good grief, these two new roommates are something special!

Petra
I’m just out of a lousy relationship, so the last thing I need is to fall right into another one. I’m definitely not looking. My dog and I desperately need a place to live, however, and Weston’s ad sounds perfect for us.

- What is your name? Do you have a nickname?
Weston Alister, Ph.D. I don’t have a nickname, but some of my clients call me “Doc.”
2. Who is your best friend? What kinds of things do you do when you’re together?
I have two best friends- Petra Feeney and Callum O’Malley. We literally do everything together, and they are the loves of my life. We live together, and we enjoy the fruits of Callum’s amazing cooking. We also have a houseful of wonderful dogs whom we all adore.
3. If you have a family, how do you get along with them? If you don’t, are there people in your life that you consider family? How do you get along with them?
I’ve lost my biological family, so Petra and Callum are my new family. I love them unconditionally.
4. Do you have a birthmark? Scars? Where is it? How did you get it?
The only scar I have is the huge one on my heart. I’ve lost so much, it’s taken me a lot of effort to come back from the depression this caused.
5. When you’re angry, what do you do? Where do you go? How do you deal with your anger?
I’m not really an angry person. Anger over my past is futile. When I get upset, I work out with my weights or go for a run. I can also blow off steam by playing with the dogs. Sometimes I just need a quiet place to retreat to.
6. A penguin walks up to you, right now, wearing a sombrero. What does he say to you and why is he here?
He’s probably one of my mental health clients, and he’s having an identity crisis. I talk him down calmly and rationally and determine whether or not he’s in need of hospitalization. I see all kinds.
7. What’s the one thing you’re afraid of losing?
I’m afraid of losing Callum and Petra if either of them should decide to move away. That would be devastating, but it would also be their choice.
8. What makes you laugh out loud?
I laughed so hard when I explained to Petra and Callum that what Petra saw was a misunderstanding of astronomic proportions. They laughed just as hard as I did.
9. What’s your favorite food?
Just about anything that Callum fixes. The man has an incredible imagination and talent in the kitchen. He’s destined for great things.
10. What’s the one thing you want out of life that you don’t think you can have? Why can’t you have it?
Happiness seemed to allude me for years, so it felt as if I’d never feel it again. Thank heaven, I was wrong.

Thank you for asking, Crystal! My book The Artist features Jeeves- a Maine Coon who becomes a valued member of the family. And my book Savor This in the Lovers in Louisville series also has 2 cute kitties in it, Trilby and Beanie. The animals in my books are always important. I love them.
