Prologue

 Two years earlier…

I just got home from a date with Hunter Vilensio and there are police cars everywhere. I quickly run up my walkway and into my house, to find blood on the furniture and my parents’ bodies sitting on the couch with their throats cut.

“You shouldn’t see this. Let’s go back outside,” a female cop tells me. I’m in a dace as my make my way back outside. Everything was fine when I left, so who could have done this?

“What happened?” I ask as I sob, tears rolling down my cheeks and covering them in wetness. I look around for Hunter and see him arguing with someone on the phone. Sometimes I wonder why I fell for him. He’s good-looking, with medium-length brown hair that is nicely kept up, blue eyes, and skinny. He has no muscles to be seen, so I think I fell for him because of his personality and charm.

“It looks like a robbery,” the officer says, and I nod. She heads back into the house and Hunter walks up the walkway and stops halfway up the stairs. My mind is in a faraway land because I don’t want this to be real. My parents are dead and now I have to go live somewhere else.

“We need to talk,” he says as he leans against the railing. I look over at him and see nothingness in his eyes. They are blank and emotionless.

“What is it?” I ask, my voice thick with emotion.

“We have to end this. My wife is threatening divorce. I will lose my kids.”

My heart stops. He’s married with kids?

“You bastard!” I scream and pounce on him. I get in a few laps before I hands grab me around the waist, trying to pull me off him.

“You really thought I would leave my wife for you?” He cackles. Fresh tears run down my face and my stomach hurts.

“I think you should leave,” a male officer says, and Hunter strides down the sidewalk smiling, like he just didn’t rip my heart out and stomp on it. I am taken to my porch swing, and I sit down. Bodies in black bags are brought out of the house and put into a van. My life has gone from good to bad in just seconds. If I would have been home, I would be dead too. From this moment on, I’m done with love because love doesn’t exist. Love died with my parents.
