Violet coughed to get her sister’s attention. “Back to the mayor’s dilemma. If someone got into the house and the trunk without breaking in, then they have access he doesn’t know about.”
Scarlett lined up the condiments in front of her. “You think the thief is a member of his staff?”
“Very likely.” Violet had considered this on the drive home. “Or it could be someone else who knows where he keeps his keys. Which implies they have access to him because the trunk key is in his pocket—I’m assuming most of the time.”
“He wouldn’t sleep with it in his pocket, would he?”
“Good point, Ruby. Unless his jammies have a wee pocket. Perhaps he tucks it under his pillow.”
“I didn’t know the tooth fairy liked brass,” Ruby chuckled.
“Hahaha. He’d have to be a sound sleeper for him to not notice it digging in, and they would need to get inside the house first.”
“Which clearly isn’t an issue,” Scarlett mused.
Violet nodded. “We could ask him who works there now, or did in the past, who had the keys at any time.”
“I think you’ll find that’s the sheriff’s job,” Scarlett said firmly
“And when has that ever stopped you?” Violet demanded.
“That was in my reckless days.” Scarlett sniffed. “I’m a changed woman.”
“Since when? The last case we cracked was barely three months ago.”
