Karen’s Killer Drop-In Diary ~ 02-28-13 ~ Back In The Saddle Again

[[Welcome to my weekly writer’s diary where I’ll share my “Woot Woot!” moments and the not so “woot woot” moments of my writing world. And, yes, I might even share the occasional musing or two about reading and writing, two of my favorite things!]]

Dear Diary,

            It’s Thursday ~ 02/28/13 ~ and…

As you read this diary entry, I’m back in the saddle of my Just Write sessions with my best friends and critique buddies. Today on Just Write day, I plan to make a serious inroad into Killing Secrets which has languished long enough.  At the very least, I need to figure out where I am in the story so I can move on to the next scenes.

I’ve been missing my sessions with the ladies. We all tend to get so overwhelmed with outside stuff in our lives that turning one day a week over to our writing just makes sense…and keeps us sane.  It’s tough when we run into those times when we have to stop meeting altogether.  We haven’t met since before the holidays for the obvious reasons.  I even added two major surgeries into the mix this year! I admire any writer who can actually accomplish something in December.  January was tough because we’d lost our fifth member, Jan.  Our hearts just weren’t in it.  This will be our first session without our number one cheerleader.  I have no doubt she’ll be with us.

Yesterday, I was surprised to see the number of people who are now following me on Twitter. Over 8,000!  I’ve been a bit remiss in my Twitter posts during recent weeks thanks to my surgeries, although I have tried to dip into the Twitter pool every day, so this was a nice surprise. I guess I didn’t disappear as completely as I thought!  I can set my “guilt” card aside for now.  🙂

I’m chompin’ on the bit to move my office out of the dining room and back into my office downstairs now that I’m beginning to navigate the stairs again, but I’m going to force myself to wait another week. If I can get through this next weekend without hitting my husband with a “Honey Do” list to move everything, I might actually succeed in putting it off. I know I’m not in the position to carry all of this stuff back down there and put it all together again. I have all I can do to carry myself around! 🙂

On the other hand, I’m tempted to keep my office in the dining room until I finish painting the last partial wall/shelves so I don’t have to move everything around again but have a feeling I’m not going to be able to wait that long. I do miss my office and the “energy” I’ve created there that helps me to write. I’m ready to toddle slowly up and down the stairs, but painting walls and getting down on the floor to take care of the baseboards isn’t on my immediate agenda.  Must walk before I dance, right?!  My inner organizational goddess rails at this notion though.

Before I go, I’d like to introduce you to a new writing buddy. I received this cute pal from a great friend to help me with my convalescence. Thank you, Kally!! I named him “Bees Knees” and he’s been sitting to the right of my laptop for a couple of weeks. When I move back downstairs to my office, he’ll keep my writing dragon, Goldilash (also sharing in case you haven’t seen the writing buddy my daughter made for me), company on my desk.

One other exciting thing that’s happening in the Docter household? Check out what my canaries are doing!  Photos on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Karen-Docter-Author/112017712223396.

See you next Thursday for another rousing entry in Karen’s Diary Drop-In….

  1. Welcome back, Karen! I’ve not been one of your blog readers long enough to have heard about this ‘Just Write’ day before – what a GREAT idea! Something I’m going to try to incorporate in my life, although I think it will be once a month for now.

As for painting those shelves, can’t that go onto the ‘Honey Do’ list? Then you might get back into your office more quickly!

Good to know that you’re up and around again.

    1. Thank you, Mary! I love my Just Write sessions with my friends. We create an amazing amount of energy when we’re in the same room together. I’m happy to report that I added 1,100 plus new words to my project today, the most productive I’ve been in ages. 🙂 I highly recommend, even if you can only do it once a month for now. Even one day a month will add that much more to your work.

I could ask my honey to do it, but I’m good at it and enjoy it. It can wait. I’m thinking about changing my office around in a way that would free up that corner for when I’m ready to just open up the paint can. I can still get back into my office in next couple of weeks. Then, watch me cook! 🙂

Thanks for commenting. Enjoyed talking with you. Have a great day tomorrow!
