EXCERPT
People burst into the mall. I assumed it was some kind of prank, or one of those “flash mob” things I’d seen on TV where by prearrangement people drift into an assigned location and at the top of the hour, break into song and dance.
But these people didn’t drift and they certainly didn’t sing. They raced into the mall, then skidded to a stop, dazed.
One woman raced up to me clutched at my shirt. “Dragons,” she gasped, her eyes bulging and her face white. “Dragons.”
Was this a joke? A new kind of Candid Camera show? Did they still make those? Was I being “punked”? I looked around for anyone pointing any kind of camera in my direction but didn’t see any. Shaking my head, I peeled the woman off. I ambled toward the plate-glass entry doors to see for myself and stopped. Scaly legs thicker than tree trunks tromped through the dense smoke swirling in the parking lot. Haphazardly parked cars exploded like popcorn and charred bodies littered the smoldering asphalt. Though I didn’t want to believe my eyes, the beast prowling the parking lot was too solid to be an apparition. Tens of feet tall with wings that spanned the entire lot, it loomed over the two-story building. I staggered backward in stunned horror.

NOTE FROM DEVORAH: I buy eggnog every December. Why? I don’t know. I don’t even like the stuff. Over the years I’ve come up with ways to use leftover eggnog. Eggnog bread, eggnog ice cream. At the end of 2017, I made eggnog scones and eggnog waffles but I still had eggnog left. So I tried Breakfast Eggnog. This is eggnog with brandy and Triple Sec. Now I don’t usually imbibe before I’ve even taken my vitamins, at least not since my hot-air-ballooning days. But this was pretty good.
Here’s my recipe for Lazy Girl’s Eggnog Scones
LAZY GIRL’S EGGNOG SCONES
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Ingredients:
2 cups Bisquick original mix
1/3 cup eggnog
1 egg
a little milk for glazing
a little granulated sugar for glazing
Note: if you don’t have eggnog, you can substitute 3 Tablespoons sugar and 1/3 cup cream. You might also want to add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Combine the ingredients and stir to make a smooth dough. Pat the dough out into a circle about 9” in diameter, about 1/2” thick on an ungreased cookie sheet. Score into 6 or 8 triangles. (Or, drop by tablespoons into six or eight mounds.) Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for about 12 minutes until golden.

Thanks, Devorah, for sharing your book with us!
Don’t miss the chance to read this book!
Thank you, Karen. I hope visitors will bake up a quick batch of scones, brew a favorite beverage, and then settle in to enjoy reading “Chosen.”
Good morning, Devorah, and welcome to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. I can’t wait to try both the recipe and the collection. Love the concept behind all four stories. Especially love your dragon in the picture. 🙂 Thanks for sharing everything with us today!
Nice meeting you, Devorah. I went to your website and saw your mystery series which looks like something I would enjoy.
I love scones and these sound delicious. Since I don’t usually make scones, I’ll share your recipe with someone who does.
Using the baking mix, these are so quick and ridiculously easy to make and very satisfying. Enjoy!
