A HOOK AND A HATTER
A Portal to Madness Series Novella
BY STEPHANIE AYERS
Excerpt
“What a horrid looking creature,” Apolliana said. “So like us, yet so very different.”
“I’ve never seen anything like it before. We should take it to Queen Jerika,” Bristney said.
Apolliana tapped Hook with her staff. “Is it dead?”
Bristney shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. The queen will still want to see it. What if it’s a part of that invasion she keeps talking about? We’d be in big trouble if we kept this to ourselves. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to be flogged.” She hauled Hook from the ground and slung him over her shoulder. Her knees buckled slightly under his weight. “Oof. It’s as heavy as a bear. Queen Jerika will be pleased.”
The women marched quickly across the dry terrain. Within a few strides, they reached the base they called home. A large tent had been set up in the middle of the base, with smaller tents circling it. The base hummed and thrived as women of all sizes bustled about. Some carried clothing, which they dropped bundles of in front of the tents they passed. These were the laundry workers, responsible for every cloth item on the base, including repairs.
Others hauled large vats of water on a homemade wagon, stopping only long enough to allow other women to fill their pitchers from the vats before moving on to the next tent. These were the water bearers, tasked with ensuring the water quality and portioning it equally among the all-female society.
A few women armed with makeshift spears stood guard around the base. One of these women stopped Bristney and Apolliana.
“What in Jerika’s name is that?” the guard said, her battle-scarred face wrinkling with disgust. She poked Hook in the side with the tip of her spear, and he grunted. “What an awful sound. Take it to Jerika. She’ll want to see this monstrosity immediately.”

Don’t miss the chance to read this book!
Both the book and the recipe sound wonderful! I love goulash! Thank you fore sharing.
You’re welcome!
Had never thought to put cream cheese in my goulash, although I served it with sour cream as a side…thanks for the idea…
Good morning, Stephanie, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Fixin’s. I can’t wait to try this recipe. Sounds different and delicious. So does the story. I have loved the character, Hook, since Once Upon a Time and can’t wait to read about another sexy pirate. Thanks for sharing your story with us today!
Once Upon A Time’s Hook is actually the inspiration behind my Hook.
He’s the vision that will be in my head when I read the story. LOL
Yummy
The book sounds exciting, and the recipe sounds yummy!
