Piper
Years ago, my father swore a blood oath that bound me and my sisters to the Draven Coven, and now the time has come to fulfill his promise. We must offer ourselves to Prince Gregory so that he can choose which of us he wants to marry, and in doing so, we’ll reunify the magical community. Too bad my heart already belongs to someone else. But if I don’t play my part, my sisters will die, and I can’t let that happen—even if that means I’ll never see Jax again.
Jax
Losing Piper broke me, and I’m not sure I’ll ever recover. But when my friends and family show up with a group of unexpected allies, I suddenly have a renewed sense of hope. Together, we formulate a plan to rescue Piper and her sisters, but it’s dangerous, and if our timing isn’t precise, I risk losing Piper for good. At first, things go according to plan, but when Piper’s sisters refuse to join our fight, any hope of a future with Piper vanishes. Until her sister makes a move that shocks the entire magical community, leaving Piper coven-less and on the run. And I’m going to be right by her side.

Excerpt
After the wait-staff cleared our empty plates, King Harold leaned back in his chair and rubbed his round belly. “I suppose the time has come for us to discuss business.”
Peyton shifted in her seat. “Yes, I suppose it has.”
“Dessert will be served momentarily, but we can speak until then.” Queen Lucy leaned forward as if she were going to prop her elbows on the table but then thought better of it. Instead, she folded her hands in her lap like a proper lady was trained to do.
“It is my hope that together we can restore the six royal covens and bring much needed order to the magical community.” King Harold’s attention was focused on us.
“That is our hope, too.” Peyton offered a genuine smile.
“Of course, we’re excited to welcome one of you into our family as well.” Queen Lucy’s eyes sparkled with undiluted joy.
I wanted to ask her if she’d be as excited about this if her daughter were the one being offered to a man she didn’t know and didn’t love. Surely, the queen would have a different outlook then. But I forced myself to remember the promise I’d made to Peyton not to do or say anything offensive, and so I kept my mouth shut. At this rate, though, my tongue would be bloody from how hard I was biting it.
“Speaking of that”—Peyton shifted forward slightly—“I think all of us are eager to know which of us Prince Gregory chooses.”
“I haven’t chosen yet.” Prince Gregory dabbed his mouth with a napkin. “I’d like to take the time between now and the Royal Coven Ball to get to know each of you a little better.”
The Royal Coven Ball was scheduled for a month from now. I snatched my goblet and raised it to my lips to hide my scowl. Of course, he was going to prolong this. Though, maybe this would work in my favor. If Jax were planning something, he’d need time, and if Prince Gregory really wanted to get to know me, I’d show him who I truly was, and I’d make sure he didn’t like me.
“This is a lifelong decision, and I’d hate to make the wrong one,” Prince Gregory said. Arms folded on the table, he was the picture of ease.
“Of course.” Peyton smiled and nodded. “I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we’re excited to get to know you as well.”
I snorted, then tried to cover my displeasure with a cough. Beneath the table, Peyton nudged my leg with hers.
Ugh. Seriously. She needed to chill out. I’d kept my word and hadn’t said anything wrong, and I wouldn’t start now. Though the idea of lunging across the table and shoving my fork through Prince Gregory’s eye was entertaining. I took another drink, this time to stifle my giggle.

LOADED BAKED POTATO
Ingredients:
- 4-5 large potatoes
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup flour
- 6 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 package bacon
- 1 bunch green onions
- 1 cup sour cream
Directions:
- Cook bacon using your preferred method. Make sure bacon is a little crispier than normal, but do not burn / char it. Set aside to cool. Once fully cool, crumble for later use.
- Peel and dice potatoes into bite-sized chunks. Boil until cooked but firm (doesn’t fall apart when you stick a fork in them).
- Dice green onions and set aside.
- In large saucepan, melt butter over low heat.
- Add flour, stirring until smooth.
- Gradually add milk—one cup at a time. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick and bubbly. DO NOT BOIL! (I’ve personally found that this step can take between 30-45 minutes.)
- Stir in potato chunks, salt, pepper, cheese, bacon, and onion.
- Heat until thoroughly cooked / warm.
- Add sour cream.
- Serve and enjoy!

Afternoon, Kara, and welcome back to Karen’s Killer Book Bench. I loved sharing a second recipe this week, especially since I’m partial to loaded potato soup! Your story sounds delectable, too. I can’t wait to see what Piper does to get out of this commitment she’s doesn’t want. And poor Jax! Arranged marriages aren’t fun…unless you love the one “arranged”. Thanks for sharing your book with us today!
