MERCY
Love Stories from a Small Town
BY JESSICA WHITE
Blurb
A woman who just wants to start over somewhere new, the men who would do anything to protect her, and the secret that changes everything…
After losing her husband, Mercy Wolfe runs away from the horrors of her past to start over in a small town.
The local sheriff keeps Mercy close, his need to protect her bordering on obsession. But that spark between them fizzles as soon as she comes face to face with the man of her dreams.
Both men want to win her heart, but someone else is watching her, too.
When danger comes for Mercy, she’ll learn the hard way who she can trust, and that she has one more secret to share. A secret that will alter the course of her life forever.
Mercy is a book from the Love Stories from a Small Town Collection. If you like more mature couples, second chances, and small-town life, you’ll love this series!

Mercy-
Still searching for that wedding ring on my finger, I scratched at the permanently pale area near my knuckle before I checked his hand, too. “Why aren’t you married? If you don’t mind me asking.”
The fist he had closed over his steering wheel flicked out for him to look at it, and the arm around me jerked. “I like my freedom, I guess.”
My cheek rested against the seatback, and I studied every perfect line of his face as I nodded. “Yeah, I can tell that about you.”
A length of hair from the back of my head wrapped around his finger, and he gave it a yank. “How long were you with your husband?”
“Um,” — the warmth of his hand had me melting back into his palm — “I met Josh when I was seven.” Working his thumbs against his fingers, he rubbed at the back of my neck like it was so natural to have his hands on me. “My daddy had been killed just a few months before, and the kids at school were ruthless.”
Working into the tight ball of stress that sat at the base of my head like I hoped he would, I bent away so he could go deeper. “One day at the playground, this older red-haired boy pushed me down and made me cry. And out of nowhere, Josh just starts beating the living shit out of him.”
Throaty laughter like a train chugged from Dan as he snatched his hand back to make the turn for the interstate, leaving a gaping hole right in the center of me. “He was pretty much my shadow from that day on.” To fight that burn starting in my eyes, I blew up into them. “He was…” No matter how I struggled to stop the quiver in my lip, I was already crying into my palm. “He was my first everything. My only everything. I’ve never even kissed another man.”
That hand started kneading between my shoulders again, and I swiped my face with my forearm. “Sorry. The past six months have just been really hard.”
The hand I tried to hide my face with pulled away, and his kiss spread out through the back of it. “It’s okay. We can talk about it or not. But I want you to know I’m here for you either way.”
From the moment I dropped into the seat across from him in that booth last night, I knew everything would be different somehow. Though even in my wildest dreams of him, I never imagined how much he was about to change my life.
Jessica lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains that she writes about so often.
Prior to writing small town, later in life romance and dark romantic fantasy, Jessica earned a graduate degree in Business Administration after spending most of her life as a Registered Nurse.
She is a lover of all things metaphysical, being surrounded by nature, anything chocolate, and Harry Potter (I’m still very upset I haven’t received my letter).
