Blurb

When Bailey Carter’s best friend is dumped days before her wedding, a girls’ trip is in order, but Bailey’s not too sure she wants to go to Edisto. The island is tiny, but surely it’s big enough for her not to run into the only man she ever loved. Or is it?

Excerpt

Edisto Beach has a nickname. The locals call it Edi-slow. It’s on an island about an hour’s drive from Charleston, South Carolina, and about three hours from our Georgia hometown. Once you hit that bridge over the intracoastal waterways, life seems to slow down. The town of Edisto Beach has a population of about 2,200. It’s not a huge island, but it’s one of the state’s largest barrier islands. Spanish moss-covered trees shelter the single-lane main road into the coastal town.

Edisto Beach itself has 4.5 miles of natural beach, where you can find beautiful shells, seabirds of every description, hermit crabs, and sand dunes with tall reeds. There are a handful of restaurants, a tiny grocery store, a state park, and zero high-rise hotels. If you want to stay at Edisto, you can’t check into a beachfront hotel because there are none. Your best bet is renting a beach house. They come in all shapes and sizes. The sleepy town has homes dating back before certain building codes, so there are ranch-style one-level homes next to homes on stilts. There are a few houses that are fancier than the rest, but many have been around for years. There’s also camping at the nearby state park. That’s definitely not for me. I enjoy the outdoors, but I wouldn’t call myself a camper. I like my air conditioning and a soft bed too much, although lying on a blanket under the stars does have its appeal. The beachfront wraps around to the St. Helena Sound and the South Edisto River. What’s beautiful about that is that you can see a sunrise and a sunset over the water at spots not too far apart.

I loved Edisto because of its natural beauty. A couple of my hobbies are drawing and photography. I wanted to be a professional photographer, but I had opted for something I thought I could make a living at. Taking pictures in the day of the cell phone camera didn’t seem like something I could support myself doing. Edisto has plenty of photo ops for the nature lover. The dolphins can be seen playing near the point; there are loggerhead sea turtles who build their nests on the shore; there are always seashells if you’re up early enough. It’s not like other beaches with their skyscraping resorts, bright flashing neon signs, nightclubs, and other attractions. There are only a few specialty shops, several beautiful churches, a couple of gas stations, and a lot of beauty, not tons of shopping at the outlet malls or dancing the night away at a club like other beaches in South Carolina. Those things weren’t my speed. At Edisto, you can rent kayaks, go fishing, ride bicycles, build sandcastles, and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore. It’s a family beach so you’re likely to see children playing in the waves, dogs chasing balls, and fishermen with several lines in the water amid the sun worshippers.

That’s what I liked about Edisto. It was laid back and as far from touristy as possible. I liked that I could bring my sketchbook and sit on the shore to stare at the sandpipers and gulls who danced with the waves – chasing after them as they withdrew from the shoreline and skittering away as the waves fanned the beach. I loved capturing the waves as they crashed against the rocks.
